DESCRIPTION OF INTERN ASSIGNMENT
Intern assignment
Describe the responsibilities and activities related to the Assignment. If relevant, relate these activities to the requirements for completion of the Internship as set by the Institute of Education. Include details of department where the Internship will be carried out.
The intern will join the Grid Connection Technology team ( DRX/GM Power Technology) and work on Diode GridBridge, Shell’s diode-rectifier (DRU) based MVDC power solution for large loads such as data centres and electrified LNG (eLNG).
The assignment develops a contract-driven method to design and price power supply for large loads: contract → requirement → design → cost → price. Main activities:
– Review public service-level agreements (SLAs) of hyperscalers, including emerging flexible SLAs, and eLNG availability requirements.
– Translate SLA and performance requirements into power-supply reliability and availability requirements.
– Build a RAM (reliability, availability, maintainability) model to derive the minimum Diode GridBridge configuration (DRU, gas turbines, BESS) for each requirement level, using public failure data and DRU proxies.
– Estimate cost per configuration and derive pricing per SLA tier; benchmark against a conventional AC solution.
– Implement the method in a Python model and document results in a report.
The intern will be supervised by Songda Wang (Electrical Engineer, Grid Connection Technology), with commercial advice from Shell Energy. EMT studies, hardware design and customer negotiations are out of scope.
Goals and objectives
Describe the purpose of the internship, including goals that are preferred to achieve.
The purpose of the internship is to link large-load availability requirements to Diode GridBridge power design, so that Shell can offer different design classes with clear pricing and support the commercialisation of Diode GridBridge.
Goals:
– A method to translate SLA / performance requirements into power reliability requirements for data centres and eLNG.
– A RAM-based design and cost model for Diode GridBridge, with an AC benchmark.
– A pricing logic per SLA tier that can be used in discussions with hyperscalers and eLNG projects.
– Deliverables: a Python model and a final report, including an eLNG-focused report.
For the intern, the goal is to gain hands-on experience in power-system reliability, techno-economic modelling and the commercial side of energy projects in an industrial setting.

DISCLAIMER:
Core Responsibilities
The intern will join the Grid Connection Technology team to develop a contract-driven method for designing and pricing power supply solutions for large loads. Key activities include building a RAM model for Diode GridBridge configurations and benchmarking them against conventional AC solutions.
Requirements
The candidate should be capable of translating service-level agreements into power reliability requirements and implementing these in a Python-based model. The role requires strong analytical skills to derive pricing logic and document findings in a professional report.
