For a client in Amsterdam, we are looking for several mid-level and senior Java Software Engineers. You will build business-critical financial applications covering tax calculations, billing and integrations with payment systems. Details Start: ASAP End date: 30 April 2027 Hybrid: working on-site in Amsterdam 2 days per week is mandatory Language requirements: fluent English; Dutch preferred Challenges Develop and maintain Java services for financial processes. Build distributed systems that handle large volumes of requests. Modernise legacy applications towards a service-oriented architecture. Work with Kafka, AWS, relational databases and Cassandra. Translate requirements from finance, tax and legal into reliable technical solutions. As a senior engineer: lead technical initiatives, justify architectural decisions and coach colleagues. Who you are and what you bring Mid-level: 3–5 years of backend development experience, including at least 3 years with Java. Senior: at least 6 years of relevant experience, including at least 6 years with Java, complemented by experience in service architecture and platform modernisation. Strong hands-on experience with Java, microservices, distributed systems and high-load services. Experience with MySQL and other relational databases, Cassandra, Kafka and AWS. A proactive, customer-focused approach and a willingness to share your knowledge. You value working together to find effective solutions. Experience in large organisations or complex environments is a strong plus. Experience in finance, payments, billing or tax is a strong plus. Knowledge of Node.js, GCP, Kubernetes, SLOs and monitoring is also welcome, as are an interest in compliance and the ability to communicate with non-technical stakeholders.

Requirements

Mid-level candidates need 3–5 years of backend development experience, including at least 3 years with Java; senior candidates need at least 6 years of relevant experience, including at least 6 years with Java, plus service architecture and platform modernisation experience. Strong hands-on experience with Java, microservices, distributed systems, high-load services, relational databases, Cassandra, Kafka, and AWS is required; fluent English is required, while Dutch and experience in finance, payments, billing, or tax are preferred.
