Internship: EMC/EMI Test Setup for IVUS Image Interference (Master)

As an R&D Engineering Intern, you will investigate the “spoke-wheel” interference pattern that can appear as an artefact in phased-array and rotational IVUS imaging during EMC/EMI verification testing.

Your role:

  • Develop a test setup that mimics the relevant IVUS system behavior and enables investigation of EMI susceptibility.
  • Investigate potential sources of the interference pattern and assess how conducted EMI and other disturbances affect image quality.
  • Plan and execute EMC/EMI lab measurements, including controlled noise injection and capture of relevant data sets.
  • Analyse the impact of interference on medical-device performance and functionality.
  • Explore practical options to prevent, attenuate, or remove the interference pattern.
  • Document the approach, results, conclusions, and recommendations in a final report or research paper.

Main Deliverables:

  • Test setup for EMI susceptibility investigation
  • EMC/EMI lab data sets, including disturbances superimposed on clinical data
  • Final presentation of key findings
  • Final report or research paper

You're the right fit if:

  • Strong command of English (spoken & written)
  • Currently a Master’s degree in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • Ability to read, synthesize, and critically analyze scientific and technical literature
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Solid critical thinking and problem‑solving abilities
  • Ability and interest to work hands-on in a laboratory environment and operate relevant measurement/test equipment (such as a spectrum analyzer, antennas, signal generators, oscilloscopes, RF amplifiers, Power meters, etc.)
  • Knowledge of RF communication, interference mechanisms, and electromagnetic principles

How we work together

We believe that we are better together than apart. For our office-based teams, this means working in-person at least 3 days per week. Onsite roles require full-time presence in the company’s facilities. Field roles are most effectively done outside of the company’s main facilities, generally at the customers’ or suppliers’ locations.

Monthly full-time allowance between €500 - €700 gross, depending on your education level. If you need to relocate to The Netherlands specifically for the internship there will be a different allowance. Part-time internships receive the allowance pro-rata.

Housing compensation, in case of relocating to the vicinity of the office, €300,- net if location is in the vicinity of Amsterdam, €255,- net for all other Philips locations. To be eligible, your usual home-work travel distance needs to be more than 50 km or 1.5 hours of travel time (one way). Afterwards, you need to provide the rental contract from your (new) landlord.

Travel compensation, if you are not eligible for a free public transport (OV chipkaart - student travel product); you can receive max. €192,- net depending on your location. Paid holidays per internship term.
