Job Description

Introduction to the job

ASML is relentlessly driving the semiconductor industry’s ongoing quest for producing faster, smarter and more energy-efficient chips. We are a young, dynamic, international and highly skilled workforce creating, with strong support of our suppliers, the lithographic tools the industry needs to achieve its goals.

Are you passionate about enabling breakthrough research through the development of advanced laboratory capabilities and experimental infrastructure? Then you will enjoy this position in the Testbench and System Design group at ASML Research.

You will be part of a multidisciplinary team responsible for developing and maintaining the experimental environments, laboratory capabilities, and technical infrastructure that enable research projects for the next generation of ASML’s lithography and metrology products. In this role, you will combine technical leadership, practical skills, and design engineering to accelerate research and technology development across ASML and external partners.

Role and responsibilities

As a Research Engineer within the Testbench and System Design group, you will be involved in designing and realizing advanced laboratory setups that support cutting-edge research activities. You will use your practical skills to help researchers translate new ideas into experimental environments, helping to build the evidence to make breakthrough advances in technology.

You will work in the highly multidisciplinary environment of Research, including collaboration with relevant D&E stakeholders and external suppliers. Many Research projects involve completely new technology and a mindset of curiosity and exploration is essential.

The job consists of:

  • Working with the project team, use agreed specifications to create designs and drawings for components or modules, including realization and qualification of your designs and de-risking.
  • Using a pragmatic ability to translate concepts into designs for new setups or experiments, interacting with other engineering disciplines in Research and D&E. Manage technical uncertainties and risks for setups and tools.
  • Participate in running experiments, and be able to assist in troubleshooting of unexpected laboratory results.
  • Coordinate internal and external farm-out activities at technical level. Build and maintain a network with suppliers.
  • Contribute to standardization of modular laboratory tooling and measurement capabilities across research projects.

Education and experience

  • Bachelor or equivalent degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.
  • Experienced in 3D CAD modeling (preferably UG/NX)
  • Dedicated knowledge of precision engineering, opto-mechanics, constraint design
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary R&D environments preferably on complex engineering challenges with limited supervision
  • Experience with FEM or holding a NAFEMS Certificate or experience with the Simcenter (Pre/Post) would be an advantage.

Skills

Working at the cutting edge of technology, you will continuously face new challenges and opportunities. You will collaborate with experts from a wide range of disciplines and play a key role in shaping the experimental capabilities required for future technology breakthroughs.

To thrive in this job, you will need the following skills:

  • Good technical skills and the ability to work independently on designs.
  • Practical problem-solving capabilities with an out-of-the-box mindset.
  • Ability to translate research needs into practical laboratory and infrastructure solutions.
  • Good communication skills and ability to influence decision-making across organizational boundaries.
  • Flexible, committed, and self-propelling.

Other information

About ASML

Industry: Semiconductor Manufacturing

Company size: 10,001+ employees

Who are we? ASML is an innovation leader in the global semiconductor industry. We make machines that chipmakers use to mass produce microchips. Founded in 1984 in the Netherlands with just a handful of employees, we’ve now grown to over 40,000 employees, 143 nationalities and more than 60 locations around the world. What do we do? We provide chipmakers with hardware, software and services to mass produce patterns on silicon through lithography. Our lithography systems use ultraviolet light to create billions of tiny structures on silicon that together make up a microchip. We push our technology to new limits to enable our customers to create smaller, faster and more powerful chips. Who are our people? While you may think that only engineers and mathematicians work at ASML, you'll be surprised to find out that our people come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Across ASML, we have dedicated teams that manage customer support, communications and media, IT, software development and more. Every team in the company is essential for pushing our technology and the industry forward.
