Job Description

Some assignments require more than sound analysis. They call for the experience to bring structure to ambiguity, challenge established thinking and help leaders turn difficult choices into practical outcomes. As Senior Management Consultant, you will lead complex transformation assignments across ING, from the initial conversation with the sponsor through to recommendations that shape strategic decisions and drive transformational change.

The team

Global Consulting is ING's in-house management consulting team within the Global Change & Transformation department. We work on strategic and transformation challenges that cut across businesses, functions and countries. We combine the analytical insights and rigour of a leading consultancy firm with a deep understanding of ING, its customers and the banking sector.

Our consultants work in small, senior teams with direct access to decisionmakers. The Consultant VI is the most senior consulting role in the team. The role therefore goes beyond successful assignment delivery. You will help shape our assignment portfolio, strengthen senior client relationships, develop colleagues and raise the standard of our consulting practice.

Your role

We value leadership impact and adaptability as much as strict checklist experience. If your background aligns with the core vision of this role, even if you don't tick every single bullet point, we strongly encourage you to apply. Tell us in your application or cover note what unique perspective and track record you’ll bring to the team.

You will independently identify, shape, secure and lead high-impact assignments with global relevance. You set the direction, create alignment and remain accountable for the quality and impact of the work. Depending on the assignment, you may lead a team or work directly with the sponsor as a senior expert.

  • Lead complex, ambiguous assignments from initial problem definition through to recommendations that shape strategic decisions and change, with clear ownership of quality, pace and measurable impact.
  • Act as a trusted adviser to senior leaders: identify what is really at stake, challenge constructively and translate strategic choices into decisions that can be implemented.
  • Structure difficult business questions through creative, hypothesis-driven thinking and oversee the qualitative and quantitative analysis across the assignment.
  • Shape the overall assignment storyline and ensure that recommendations and deliverables are concise, evidence-based and ready for senior decision-making across all workstreams.
  • Define and adapt the methodological approach for each assignment, developing new frameworks where established methods are not sufficient.
  • Bring a deep perspective on banking and one or more relevant functional areas, connecting ING-specific knowledge with external developments and leading practice.
  • Guide data-driven decision-making by ensuring that analytics directly inform the strategic choices and recommendations.
  • Navigate organisational dynamics with judgement and integrity, balancing the sponsor's needs with ING's wider interests and creating alignment across organisational boundaries.
  • Build and maintain a strong senior network, create a high-quality pipeline of assignments and earn repeat mandates through consistent delivery and trusted relationships.
  • Lead, coach and develop other consultants, setting the standard for professional judgement, collaboration and quality within the team.
  • Take ownership of internal initiatives that strengthen Global Consulting and the wider Global Change & Transformation community, including capability building, methodologies and knowledge sharing.

How to succeed

You combine the judgement and presence of a senior adviser with the discipline to stay close to the facts and the drive to make change happen. You are comfortable taking a clear position, while remaining open to challenge and new evidence.

  • You excel at tackling complex, ambiguous challenges and are recognised as a trusted expert and go-to adviser.
  • You operate autonomously and take end-to-end responsibility, including for difficult choices, stakeholder interventions and the final result.
  • You are recognised for your strong analytical, conceptual and problem-solving skills, enabling you simplify complexity and translate data driven insights into actionable outcomes. You master a wide toolbox of consulting methodologies, with the ability to adapt them to ING’s context, specifically in context of Target Operating Model design.
  • You influence senior decisions through clear communication, compelling argumentation and content integrity.
  • You lead through expertise, trust and presence rather than hierarchy, and remain effective when pressure or uncertainty is high.
  • You read organisational dynamics accurately, adapt your approach where needed and know when to challenge, align or escalate.
  • You set high standards for yourself and others and actively help colleagues to grow through direct feedback, coaching and shared responsibility.
  • You bring energy and a practical, solution-oriented mindset, especially when progress is difficult or the route forward is not yet clear.
  • You put the collective result ahead of personal visibility and take the initiative on matters that move the team and consulting practice forward.

Your experience

  • A master’s degree.
  • At least 10 years of relevant professional experience in management consulting, preferably including experience at a leading external consultancy and substantial work in financial services.
  • A strong record of independently shaping and leading complex, high-impact assignments for senior sponsors, from problem definition through implementation.
  • Proven experience in leading and developing consulting teams while remaining hands-on when the assignment requires it.
  • Deep knowledge of banking and one or more relevant functional areas, with the ability to turn that knowledge into sharper choices and practical recommendations.
  • Excellent written and spoken English. Dutch is an advantage.
  • Experience working in an agile environment is an advantage.
