Why this role Our products now reach users in dozens of markets, and the services behind them have to stay fast, correct and secure as volume and scope grow. Many of the teams who define those products work in Mandarin, and this role sits right next to them, so what they need reaches the code intact. You’ll turn that into reliable backend services. In 18 months you’ll own a meaningful part of our backend, have run it under real production load, and be the person other teams bring their hardest design questions to. What you’ll do Design, build and ship backend services that handle high-volume, latency-sensitive traffic Own your services in production, from monitoring and incident response to the fixes that stop repeats Turn requirements from Mandarin-speaking product and engineering teams into clear technical designs, and document them in English for the wider team Raise the bar on code review, testing and documentation across the team Improve the performance and reliability of existing services, with results you can measure What you’ll bring Non-negotiables Has built and run backend services in production at scale, from design through on-call Writes clean, tested code and holds others’ code to the same standard Fluent in spoken and written Mandarin and English, since you’ll work daily in both Turns an ambiguous requirement into a working design without waiting to be told how Bonus Has worked on payments, trading or other financial systems Has worked in remote-first teams across time zones

Core Responsibilities

Design, build, and operate high-volume, latency-sensitive backend services, including monitoring, incident response, and improvements to performance and reliability. Translate requirements from Mandarin-speaking teams into technical designs, document them in English, and contribute to code review, testing, and documentation standards.

Requirements

Candidates must have designed and operated backend services at scale in production, including on-call responsibilities, and write clean, tested code. They must be fluent in spoken and written Mandarin and English and able to turn ambiguous requirements into working designs independently.
