Job Description
Company Description Leiden Observatory is a leading institution for astronomical research, with a strong focus on understanding the interstellar medium in nearby galaxies. Researchers at the Observatory combine observations, theory, and simulations to study how gas and dust evolve and influence galaxy formation and evolution. The institute offers an international, collaborative environment where PhD candidates work closely with experienced scientists and have access to modern facilities and data from major observatories. Leiden Observatory is committed to high-quality training, mentorship, and professional development for early-career researchers. Role Description This full-time on-site PhD position at Leiden Observatory in Leiden focuses on research into the interstellar medium in nearby galaxies. Day-to-day tasks include designing and conducting original research projects, analyzing observational and simulated data, and developing models to interpret physical processes in the interstellar medium. The PhD candidate will collaborate with supervisors and research teams, present results at group meetings and conferences, and prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Responsibilities also include contributing to the academic community through seminars, limited teaching or mentoring activities, and active participation in joint research programs. The candidate is expected to complete a PhD thesis within the appointed timeframe and engage in continuous learning and skill development. Qualifications Strong background in astronomy, astrophysics, or closely related field, with a relevant Master’s degree (or equivalent) completed or near completion. Demonstrated skills in scientific data analysis, including experience with programming languages or tools commonly used in astronomy (e.g., Python, IDL, MATLAB, or similar). Knowledge of or interest in the physics of the interstellar medium, galaxy evolution, and observational or computational methods in astrophysics. Ability to design research projects, formulate scientific questions, and work independently while collaborating effectively within a research team. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, including the ability to write scientific papers and present research results clearly. Good organizational skills, self-motivation, and a commitment to completing a PhD within the planned duration. Experience with astronomical observations, numerical simulations, or handling large datasets is an advantage. Willingness to participate in the broader academic community, including seminars, conferences, and possible teaching or mentoring activities.
Core Responsibilities
Design and conduct original research on the interstellar medium in nearby galaxies, analyzing observational and simulated data and developing models to interpret physical processes. Collaborate with research teams, present and publish findings, participate in academic activities, and complete a PhD thesis within the appointed timeframe.
Requirements
Applicants should have a relevant Master’s degree completed or near completion and a strong background in astronomy, astrophysics, or a related field. They should demonstrate scientific data-analysis and programming skills, interest in interstellar medium physics and galaxy evolution, research independence, effective collaboration, and strong English communication skills.
