This role is particularly suited to individuals with experience working alongside animal model providers, laboratory animal facilities, CROs, or regulated scientific environments.

The successful candidate will combine commercial expertise with an understanding of animal research requirements, including animal welfare considerations, supplier oversight, quality standards, and long-term capacity planning.

Working closely with Scientific Operations, Animal Resources, Veterinary Services, Quality, and Laboratory Leadership teams, you will help ensure the responsible and reliable sourcing of animal models that support critical research programmes while maintaining the highest standards of welfare, ethics, regulatory compliance, and scientific excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead sourcing strategies for animal models, with a particular focus on rodent models, genetically engineered strains, and specialist research models.
  • Develop and manage relationships with approved animal model providers, breeders, and research suppliers.
  • Partner with scientific teams to forecast demand, manage capacity requirements, and ensure continuity of supply.
  • Support sourcing activities across related categories including vivarium services, laboratory consumables, scientific equipment, outsourced research services, and logistics.
  • Lead RFIs, RFPs, RFQs, supplier selection processes, contract negotiations, and supplier performance reviews.
  • Evaluate suppliers against quality, service, delivery, regulatory compliance, and animal welfare standards.
  • Identify and mitigate supply risks, including animal model availability, supplier constraints, logistics challenges, and business continuity concerns.
  • Analyse spend data, market trends, and supplier performance to identify opportunities for value creation and operational improvement.
  • Act as a procurement business partner to Scientific Operations, Animal Resources, Veterinary Services, Quality, Finance, and Legal teams.

Experience & Qualifications

Essential

  • Significant experience in procurement, strategic sourcing, supplier management, or category management.
  • Experience working with laboratory animal model providers, preclinical research suppliers, CROs, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or other regulated scientific environments.
  • Demonstrated experience managing supplier relationships and leading commercial negotiations.
  • Understanding of animal welfare requirements, supplier compliance, and regulated research environments.
  • Strong stakeholder management, analytical, and commercial skills.

Preferred

  • Direct experience sourcing laboratory animal models, particularly rodents.
  • Experience supporting vivarium operations or animal facility services.
  • Familiarity with genetically engineered, transgenic, humanized, or specialised rodent models.
  • Experience supporting discovery or preclinical research programmes.
  • Degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Science, Life Sciences, Procurement, Supply Chain Management, or a related discipline.
