Job Description
At BioBTX, we exist to produce chemicals from waste streams, creating sustainable building blocks for a circular future. Our mission is to enable the chemical industry to transition from fossil-based resources to renewable and recycled feedstocks. Through our own inhouse developed technology, we convert biomass and plastic waste into aromatic building blocks, reducing environmental impact and driving circularity. For the expansion of our R&D team, we are looking for a R&D Chemist to join our team in Groningen. What you’ll do and why it matters Our lab is where every new idea gets its first real test. You make sure each setup works and each result is reliable. You keep the lab running and make sure all equipment works. You run and improve our lab setups: the HT-ICCP, the LGSU and the SGSU. Each one runs a small version of our process, using solid or liquid feedstock. You check the quality of every result before the team builds on it. You write the first report of each test, so the team knows what to do next. You give input on the planning, so the work fits the timeline. Something broken? You grab your tools and fix it. A result looks strange? You find out why. Your work counts. In July 2026, BioBTX decided to build its first commercial plant in Delfzijl. Construction starts in early 2027. Start-up is planned for mid 2028. What we learn in the lab moves on to the pilot plant, and from there to Delfzijl. Who you are You just graduated, or you have a few years of experience. Both are welcome. You work carefully and safely, and you want to know how things can work better. You have a bachelor’s degree (HBO) in chemistry, chemical technology or a related field. You like working with lab instruments and measuring systems. You want to understand how they work, not just press the button. You’re handy with tools. Rebuilding a setup or fixing a leak doesn’t scare you. You solve problems step by step. When something goes wrong, you look for the cause, not a quick fix. You speak and write English well. Dutch is not required (but a lot of us are Dutch, so we will teach you Dutch 😉) What you get A salary between €3,286 and €4,041 gross per month. 32 to 40 hours per week. Hands-on work with our own ICCP technology, developed in-house. Room to grow: new equipment, new techniques and new questions every week. 25 holidays Where you’ll work BioBTX is a technology development and chemistry company from Groningen. Not a waste company. We turn plastic waste into BTX. Industry uses these building blocks to make plastic bottles, insulation and medicines. Today, they still come from fossil oil. And plastic waste gets burned. We make it circular. You’re part of our R&D team and report to Kimon, Operational Lead R&D. We’re a flat organisation. What counts is what you know, not your job title. We’re researchers. We try, test and pioneer. We only scale up what works. We prove by doing. Our selection process: Screening call with Kimon. First interview with Kimon and Matina. You’ll discuss your motivation and relevant experience, followed by a tour of the facility. Second interview with Kimon and Tessa. You talk about your ambitions a work on a case. We’ll agree on a start date together. Questions? Contact Kimon at [email protected]. About BioBTX BioBTX develops and commercializes technology to produce renewable aromatics from biomass and plastic waste. These aromatics are essential building blocks for high-performance materials such as coatings, resins, and plastics. By replacing fossil-based resources with sustainable alternatives, we enable the chemical industry to reduce its environmental footprint and embrace circularity.
Core Responsibilities
Operate, maintain, and improve laboratory setups, including the HT-ICCP, LGSU, and SGSU, and ensure test results are reliable. Investigate equipment and experimental issues, prepare initial test reports, and contribute to planning as research progresses toward pilot and commercial-scale operations.

About BioBTX
Industry: Chemical Manufacturing
Company size: 11-50 employees
BioBTX is a circular chemistry technology developer that makes it possible to replaces fossil resources for biomass & plastic waste. We use these renewable resources for the production of drop-in chemicals and aromatics to enable the production of sustainable and future proof materials. BioBTX developed a unique and commercially attractive integrated catalytic pyrolysis process that maximizes BTX yield and minimizes operational costs. Without biobased and renewable aromatics the options for sustainable materials are very limited; with these renewable aromatics however, it is possible to achieve truly green and sustainable materials for the entire society and industry. At BioBTX we want to change the world; we want to make our future green. That is why we develop technology for a sustainable and circular future!
