Job Description

At AME, part of the Metis Group, we develop and manufacture high-quality electronic products for customers in the energy, climate control and industrial sectors. Based in Brainport Eindhoven, we combine electronics, mechanics, software and industrial engineering to turn complex ideas into reliable products. As an Embedded Software Engineer, you develop software for embedded Linux systems and microcontrollers, from initial requirements through validation and production. You bring solid Yocto experience and are comfortable working on microcontroller projects in embedded C. Depending on project needs, you work on either platform or products that combine both. Key responsibilities Design, develop and test software for embedded Linux systems and microcontrollers. Build, customize and maintain Yocto-based Linux distributions, including recipes, layers and board support packages. Configure and integrate bootloaders, Linux kernels, device drivers and system services. Develop embedded C software for microcontrollers, including peripheral interfaces, communication protocols and application logic. Debug software and hardware interactions using appropriate tools and measurement equipment. Contribute to requirements, software design, effort estimates and technical risk assessments. Own technical work packages through to release: plan activities, anticipate dependencies, organize reviews and tests, and follow up on outstanding actions. Meet agreed commitments and communicate progress, risks and potential delays early. Improve software quality and maintainability through code reviews, automated testing, documentation and continuous integration. Incorporate cybersecurity throughout the product lifecycle, applying principles such as least privilege and defense in depth, including Linux hardening, secure boot, secure updates and proactive vulnerability mitigation. Collaborate with electronics engineers, architects, project managers and customers throughout development. Who are you? Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Embedded Systems or a related technical field. At least 5 years of professional experience in embedded software development. Proven hands-on experience developing and maintaining embedded Linux systems using Yocto. Strong embedded C programming skills and practical microcontroller development experience. Experience with low-level debugging, hardware interfaces and protocols such as SPI, I²C, UART or CAN. You are comfortable working on both Linux-based systems and microcontroller projects. Proactive and independent: you identify what needs to happen, take initiative, involve colleagues when needed and see actions through to completion. Willing and able to use AI models and development tools to improve engineering productivity and quality, while critically reviewing and validating their output. Experience with Agile/Scrum, actively contributing to planning, refinement, reviews and continuous improvement. Clear communication across disciplines and a practical, collaborative approach. Fluent in English; Dutch is a plus. Experience in the following areas is a plus: C++ and Python. ARM Cortex-A and Cortex-M platforms. RTOS-based development. CI/CD pipelines, automated testing and Docker. Cybersecurity standards and regulatory requirements relevant to embedded products. Wireless connectivity, control systems or signal processing. Why join AME? Work on electronic products for the energy, climate control and industrial sectors. Follow your designs from development and validation through to manufacturing. Join an international team with short communication lines. Take responsibility for technical challenges and contribute to better engineering practices. Develop your technical expertise and grow professionally.

Core Responsibilities

Develop, test, and maintain software for embedded Linux systems and microcontrollers, including Yocto distributions, low-level system components, and embedded C applications. Own technical work packages through release while improving software quality and cybersecurity, and collaborating with engineers, project managers, and customers.

Requirements

Requires a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant technical field, at least five years of embedded software experience, hands-on Yocto and embedded Linux expertise, and strong embedded C and microcontroller skills. Candidates should be comfortable with low-level debugging and hardware protocols, contribute actively in Agile/Scrum teams, communicate clearly in English, and use AI development tools critically.
