Job Description

Why this role exists Delmic builds electron-microscopy instruments that let researchers and industry see and shape matter at the nanoscale. We are opening a new front: using a focused electron beam to write material where we want it, electron-beam-induced deposition, or EBID, to fabricate custom, high-precision structures that our customers cannot get made anywhere with the control they need. We have a funded, dedicated development program with an industrial customer in the semiconductor-inspection space who needs far tighter geometric control and far faster iteration on beam-written probe tips than their current supply chain can deliver. You would be the engineer who makes that happen: at the microscope, developing the process, and turning what you learn into the specification for the tools we build next. This is early-stage, real R&D. It has genuine research in it and, like all real research, it can succeed spectacularly or teach us the hard way. We have designed the role so that either way, your work compounds into something bigger. What you'll do • Run the experimental heart of the program: design test plans, sit at a SEM equipped with a gas injection system (GIS), and develop EBID recipes by fast, structured iteration • Untangle a genuinely interesting multi-variable problem, dose, dwell, scan strategy, pitch, spot size, beam energy, focus, proximity effects, and figure out which levers actually move geometry • Drive a design-iterate-measure loop measured in days in close dialogue with the customer's technical team • Characterize failure modes, build a validated baseline, then push past it toward tighter tolerances and a repeatable, documented process • Translate what you learn into hard requirements for a future dedicated instrument, you help define the tool, not just use it • Work hands-on with vacuum, beam and scan control, precursors, substrates and metrology; automate and analyze with Python where it speeds the loop What we offer A fulltime contract (38 hours) for 1 year. After a successful year we would love to extend for a permanent period A salary between €5.000 - €5.500 gross per month depending on specific experience 30 paid vacation days per calendar year Pension fund of PMT Travel expenses of €0,25 per km or actual public transport costs What we're looking for Must have • MSc or PhD in physics, applied physics, materials science, nanotechnology, or a related discipline • Hands-on experimental background with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) or comparable charged-particle / high-precision laboratory instrumentation • Proven ability to plan, execute and interpret a structured experimental campaign (test plan to data to conclusions to generalization) and to stay systematic inside a messy, coupled parameter space • A hands-on, get-to-the-answer mindset and genuine enjoyment of lab work • Able to work on-site at our office in Delft, The Netherlands and to travel occasionally to partner or customer sites in The Netherlands. We don't provide a workvisa for this role, therefore you already need to have a work authorization in The Netherlands • Fluent English No prior EBID experience is required — we are looking for someone who knows what a SEM is, can run a rigorous experiment, and can generalize from it. Strong preference • Experience with EBID/FEBID, focused ion beam (FIB), or other direct-write / beam-based nanofabrication • Gas injection systems (GIS) and vacuum systems • Beam and scan control: dose/dwell optimization, scan strategies, spot-size and focus tuning • Scripting and automation in Python for acquisition, instrument control and data analysis • Fabrication or characterization of AFM/SPM probe tips or similar high-aspect-ratio nanostructures

Core Responsibilities

Develop and optimize EBID processes using structured experiments on a scanning electron microscope, characterizing failure modes and establishing repeatable, documented fabrication methods. Collaborate with the customer and translate experimental findings into requirements for a future dedicated instrument, using Python automation and analysis where useful.

Requirements

Requires an MSc or PhD in physics, applied physics, materials science, nanotechnology, or a related field, plus hands-on experience with an SEM or comparable charged-particle or precision laboratory instrumentation. Candidates must be able to plan and interpret systematic experiments, work on-site in Delft, hold Dutch work authorization, and be fluent in English; prior EBID experience is not required.

Benefits

  • 30 Paid Vacation Days
  • PMT Pension Fund
  • Travel Expenses Reimbursement

About Delmic

Industry: Nanotechnology Research

Company size: 11-50 employees

Delmic is a passionate high-tech company based in Delft, the Netherlands that develops powerful and user-friendly solutions for electron microscopy, bringing researchers and organizations closer to research insights across diverse application fields. Integration of light and electron microscopy fundamentally impacts imaging by creating the possibility to gain deep insight quickly, easily and reliably. Delmic’s mission is to empower researchers and companies by helping them achieve results that can be trusted implicitly with powerful and user-friendly solutions. Currently, Delmic has two main product lines: cathodoluminescence solutions (SPARC Spectral, SPARC Compact and JOLT) and correlative light and electron microscopy solutions (SECOM, SECOM SR, DELPHI). All the systems cater to a broad range of researchers in fields ranging from life science, geology, materials science to nanophotonics. The company is currently working on two new projects: one is aimed to simplify the complex workflows involved in Cryo electron tomography; another project will help to increase imaging speed without sacrificing image quality with an automated multibeam scanning electron microscope. At Delmic, we believe that imaging provides a fundamental understanding of systems and is an integral part of creating a better world, therefore we aim to continuously innovate in order to offer our customers powerful insights and make research easy with simple workflows.
