Indirect Tax Associate
Key Skills
Job Description
About NOEMA Global Partnering as trusted advisors with iconic clients is what we do at NOEMA Global. These journeys call for more than expertise. They require an energised, relentless drive to stay engaged, challenge the status quo, think ahead, and assess outcomes from different perspectives. Pairing sharp expertise with technically robust judgment in every conversation and project is what makes us distinctive. The Opportunity This is a role for someone who wants to build a strong career in indirect tax advisory while working on substantive VAT/GST and indirect tax issues across jurisdictions. You’ll join our Amsterdam office and play a key role in our global indirect tax advisory practice, working closely with senior leadership on a varied portfolio of international clients and projects. The work ranges from VAT/GST advisory and cross-border tax planning to the indirect tax implications of the digital economy, including ViDA, e-invoicing and e-reporting mandates, global VAT developments and EU and global customs reforms. This is not a compliance filing role (although understanding compliance processes is important): your focus will be on strategic guidance that helps our clients manage indirect taxes efficiently and compliantly across jurisdictions. You’ll start as a highly capable individual contributor, getting into the detail and taking ownership of your work, with mentorship from seasoned experts. As our firm expands, there is a clear opportunity to grow into a people management and team leadership role. In a boutique firm, your contribution is visible: you’ll directly help build our reputation and our clients’ success, and be recognised for it. While indirect tax will be your core focus, we do not operate in silos. If you are interested in developing broader experience, you will have opportunities to work across transfer pricing, tax policy and other areas relevant to our clients. What You’ll Do Advise on VAT, GST and other indirect taxes across multiple jurisdictions, translating complex tax rules and recent regulatory changes into practical solutions and guidance for internal and external stakeholders. Contribute to cross-border projects, including reviewing international supply chains and transactions to ensure efficient and compliant indirect tax outcomes, and advise on the indirect tax aspects of new business initiatives and expansions into new countries, helping shape our clients’ global tax strategy. Monitor and evaluate the indirect tax implications of the digital economy and emerging regimes, including e-commerce VAT rules, platform economy rules, ViDA, e-invoicing systems and e-reporting obligations, and help clients adapt to these evolving rules and leverage technology-driven solutions. Identify and assess indirect tax risks across different countries, working with compliance teams or external providers to make sure obligations (e.g., registrations, filings, audits) are met efficiently. While you won’t be preparing returns regularly, you’ll help ensure compliance processes are robust and advise on improvements or automation where necessary. Partner with finance, IT systems, legal and operations teams to implement indirect tax requirements, such as integrating indirect tax logic into billing systems or ERP and making sure VAT/GST transaction flows are set up correctly, helping coordinate these initiatives and keep timelines and deliverables on track. Communicate complexindirect tax concepts clearly to non-tax professionals (e.g., businessmanagers, product teams), preparing concise memos, presentations and trainingso that technical advice is understood and actionable. Stay up to date with globalindirect tax developments, law changes and industry best practice, shareknowledge with the team and contribute to thought leadership, such as briefingsand articles on indirect tax trends. As the team grows, mentorjunior colleagues and help shape the development of our indirect tax practice. Build experience beyond indirect tax where interested, with opportunities to contribute to projects across transfer pricing and tax policy. What We're Looking For (essential) 2–3 years of hands-on experience in indirect tax (VAT, GST or similar taxes) across multiple jurisdictions, including substantive advisory or planning work, not just compliance. Strong knowledge of VAT/GST principles and indirect tax law (customs duty, excise duties, energy taxes),with proven experience addressing issues such as cross-border VAT, supply chain structuring, tax risk management and adapting to new tax regulations (e.g., rules for digital services or changing EU VAT directives). A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Law, Tax, Accounting, Finance or a related field, and a solid academic foundation in tax. Ownership and initiative. You can manage multiple priorities, take ownership of your part of a project, keep it moving and flag issues early. You research open questions independently and come back with a proposed solution, not just the problem. Strong analytical skillsand keen attention to detail. You can research and interpret international taxlaw and apply it accurately to real-world scenarios, making sure your advice isaccurate, compliant and practical. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. You can engage with a variety of stakeholders (finance colleagues, IT developers, business leaders, clients and tax authorities) and convey complex tax issues in clear, non-technical terms. Fluent English is required. Confidence working with taxtechnology and data. Experience with ERP systems, tax engines, data analysis inExcel or business intelligence tools is highly valuable, and you cancollaborate with IT teams on system configurations or troubleshoot indirect taxcalculation issues. Self-motivation, adaptability and a passion for continuous learning in a fast-changing tax landscape. You are curious about how and why tax rules evolve, and a cooperative team player. An interest in developing beyond VAT, with an appetite to gain exposure to areas such as international tax, tax policy, customs and transfer pricing. Strong organisation and prioritisation. You can keep track of multiple work streams, information requests and deadlines, including when work lands at short notice, without letting quality or attention to detail slip. Desirable: A professional qualification (e.g., ADIT, CTA, CPA, Bar admission) or progress towards one. Experience in a Big Four or law firm environment and in-house at a multinational, providing a mix of client-service and industry perspectives. Direct experience handling indirect tax matters in multiple regions (e.g., Europe, East, APAC). Familiarity with EU VAT directives and frameworks is particularly useful, as is exposure to GCC VAT regimes or other emerging markets’ indirect tax systems. Experience preparing presentations, training materials or other client-facing content. Exposure to international tax, transfer pricing, customs or other related tax areas. Additional languages, particularly another European language (we're an international team serving international clients). Our Philosophy Teaming isn't just our approach – it's our DNA. We bring everything closer to our hearts by listening to and collaborating with our clients and colleagues to deliver bespoke solutions for managing their tax affairs as if they were ours. Geographic mobility excites you. Teaming up through open communication energises you. You never compromise on integrity, you champion diversity in its broadest sense, and you actively seek fun both inside and outside working hours. Most importantly? You're allergic to mediocrity.
