Job Description

Configuration Engineer

About the Company

Do you want to be part of an innovative team working to improve maritime safety, protect marine environments, and optimize the efficiency of major ports around the world?

The company serves clients globally with advanced solutions in maritime traffic management, ports, and terminals. Together, the team helps ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and goods across the maritime sector.

Your Role

As a Configuration Engineer, you turn a designed system into a working, tuned and accepted solution. Working from the design and requirements set by the Systems Engineer and the End to End (E2E) System Architect, you configure the application to suit the customer's operational environment and prove that it behaves as intended.

You own the configuration of everything the operator sees and works with, and you set up the standard sensor and tracking parameters that come with a proven baseline. You perform functional testing and prepare and execute Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), taking ownership of findings until they are closed.

For the customer's operational staff, you are the main point of contact for understanding how the system works day to day. You also help make future projects more efficient by turning configurations into reusable templates, test sets and documented practices.

What will you do?

• Build, maintain and document the application configuration baseline for a project, ensuring it correctly reflects the agreed requirements and design.

• Apply and verify standard sensor and tracking settings from the established baseline and recognize when observed behavior in the traffic image needs specialist analysis, engaging a Systems Engineer from the tracking expert group.

• Translate the customer's operational procedures and ways of working into concrete system configuration.

• Design and execute functional test sets, verifying system behavior against requirements and operational use cases ahead of acceptance.

• Prepare, coordinate and execute FAT and SAT, including customer witnessed validation, and produce the associated test plans, procedures and reports based on acceptance criteria defined by the Systems Engineer.

• Own and drive the full life cycle of findings from testing, validation and acceptance, coordinating resolution with software development and testing teams, relevant expert groups and the Systems Engineer.

• Act as the primary point of contact for customers' operational staff on day to day functional application behavior and configuration choices, supporting or training key users where needed.

• Identify and resolve differences between product behavior and customer expectations, escalating genuine gaps to the Systems Engineer or System Architect rather than relying on one off workarounds.

• Feed structured observations from testing and site tuning back to tracking and sensor specialists, ensuring recurring adjustments are incorporated into the standard baseline rather than project specific settings.

• Develop reusable configuration templates, parameter sets, checklists and regression test sets, and maintain the functional knowledge base.

What do you bring?

• A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or a related field, or an equivalent level of experience.

• An affinity for configuring and parameterizing complex software products rather than developing them from scratch.

• Experience with structured testing, including test design, execution and reporting. ISTQB or a similar certification is a plus.

• Familiarity with configuration files and data formats such as XML, JSON and YAML, basic scripting with Python or Bash, SQL and log analysis.

• Working knowledge of Linux and networking, sufficient to isolate issues with a Deployment Engineer before escalating them.

• Precision and strong documentation skills, understanding that configuration forms the reference against which a customer accepts the system.

• Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain system behavior to operational users and traffic managers as well as software engineers.

• An understanding of how radar, AIS and other sensors produce a traffic image, and how the tracking chain processes that data. Deep radar or tracking expertise is a plus, but not a requirement.

• Knowledge of the maritime domain and Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) operations is a strong plus.

• Fluency in Dutch and English, both spoken and written.

• Willingness to spend approximately 20% of your time at customer sites, both domestically and internationally.

What is on offer?

• An inspiring, collaborative and technically challenging work environment where innovation and learning are encouraged.

• A competitive salary reflecting your experience, skills and educational background.

• An Individual Choice Budget (IKB) of 13.15% of your salary, which can be used for additional leave, extra pension contributions or paid out directly.

• 20 statutory vacation days per year, with the option to purchase up to 20 additional days through your IKB.

• A premium free pension scheme, resulting in a higher net income.

• An annual net vitality allowance of €272.50.

• The opportunity to contribute to solutions that have a real impact on global maritime safety and efficiency.

Core Responsibilities

You will configure and tune complex maritime systems to meet customer requirements and operational standards. Additionally, you will lead functional testing, execute site acceptance tests, and serve as the primary technical contact for operational staff.

Requirements

A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field is required. Candidates must possess experience in structured testing, configuration management, and proficiency in Linux, networking, and scripting languages.

Benefits

  • Individual Choice Budget
  • Vacation days
  • Pension scheme
  • Vitality allowance
  • Professional development
