About Holomicrobiome Institute
Industry: Biotechnology Research
Company size: 11-50 employees
The Holomicrobiome Innovation Institute is the bridge between microbiome discovery and application to accelerate innovations for farmers, businesses, patients, consumers and society. With the ambition to build the most integrated network for microbiome innovations in the world. The program - funded by the Dutch National Growth Fund - brings together research institutions, businesses, governments, and societal stakeholders. We cover and connects five domains: soil, plants, animals, water and humans. The goal is to turn microbiome research into microbiome-based applications, such as pre-, post- or probiotics, diagnostics tools, or predictive technologies and services for sustainable agriculture, human health and the circular economy. Examples include reducing agricultural emissions, improving water quality and biodiversity, and supporting prevention and health. To unleash the power of microbiomes we need to face innovation barriers at different levels, and across domains. At the scientific level, we need to transform microbiome science from a largely descriptive to a more predictive science. This requires data, models, and shared principles of microbiome composition and function across ecosystems. At the economic level, we need public awareness and award systems that push towards sustainability, prevention, and healthy alternatives. At the governance level, we need to reassess safety and regulatory requirements for microbiome-based products and interventions in the agrifood chain.
