Job Description
Business Unit: Philips Image-Guided Therapy (IGT)_ iApps Contract Type: Contingent Via Randstad Location: Best, Netherlands (Hybrid: 3–4 days on-site at R&D facilities) About The Role At Philips IGT Systems R&D, we develop industry-leading image-guided therapy solutions that help clinicians decide, guide, treat, and confirm the right therapy in real-time during complex interventional procedures (e.g., balloon angioplasty, cardiac stent placements). As a (Sr.) Software Design Engineer, you will join the iApps (Interventional Applications) organization developing and advancing our portfolio of 3D imaging applications on the Philips Azurion platform. You will be embedded with multi-disciplinary partner and core Scrum teams—taking ideas from early-stage de-risking and rapid prototyping (Advanced Development) to robust, high-performance clinical releases (PDLM). This is a hands-on Modern C++ engineering role focused on real-time rendering, image processing, hardware/sensor integration, and modernizing a large-scale, mission-critical codebase. Key Responsibilities Actively write, refactor, and evolve high-performance, modern C++ code (C++17/20) for real-time 3D clinical visualization and interventional guidance applications. Maintain and enhance rendering engines and visualization pipelines (OpenGL, Vulkan, DirectX, or proprietary shader pipelines) to ensure high-frame-rate, zero-stutter rendering of medical imaging data. Integrate and optimize algorithms for real-time 2D/3D image processing, volume reconstruction, noise reduction, and data acquisition streams from physical X-ray detectors and camera subsystems. De-risk architectural designs, modernize legacy subsystems and interfaces, eliminate technical debt, and ensure modularity across our shared software platform. Profile and optimize CPU/GPU bottlenecks, memory utilization, latency, and multithreading behavior to meet strict medical real-time and safety-critical standards. Design and build automated unit, integration, and subsystem test capabilities (e.g., GoogleTest, Catch2) to enable continuous testing in CI/CD pipelines. Collaborate actively in cross-functional Scrum teams (alongside internal Philips teams and external software partner teams), driving technical reviews and continuous improvement. What We Are Looking For Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or related field, with 5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience. Core Modern (C++ 17/20) has been your primary daily language with strong expertise in multithreading, memory management (RAII), and large-scale codebases. Hands-on experience in 3D Rendering & Visualization: OpenGL, Vulkan, DirectX, or VTK. Image Processing & Computer Vision: OpenCV, CUDA, or real-time sensor/camera data acquisition. Proven track record in profiling/optimizing high-performance software (Intel VTune, Valgrind) and integrating software with physical hardware/instrumentation. Experience in high-tech or safety-critical domains (Medical Devices, Robotics, Semiconductor, Automotive/ADAS, or Gaming/Simulation engines).
Core Responsibilities
Develop and optimize modern C++ software for real-time 3D medical visualization, image processing, and integration with X-ray detectors and camera systems. Modernize shared software components, improve performance and testing, and collaborate with multidisciplinary Scrum teams to deliver clinical releases.
Requirements
Requires a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, applied mathematics, or a related field, plus at least five years of hands-on software engineering experience. Candidates should have strong C++17/20 skills and experience with rendering, image processing, performance optimization, hardware integration, and high-tech or safety-critical software.
