Welcome to Maastricht University!

Do you enjoy developing methodological and statistical approaches to helping researchers answer complex scientific questions? As Assistant Professor in Methodology and Statistics, you contribute to high-quality research and education while advancing methodological innovation within the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience. In this role, you help strengthen the scientific foundations that enable impactful research and evidence-based education.

Assistant Professor in Methodology and Statistics

Our goal: To support high-quality research and education within the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience through methodological innovation, statistical expertise and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Your colleagues: You will join an engaged and collaborative team of researchers and teachers who share a passion for methodology, statistics and scientific quality. Together, you contribute to methodological innovation in an interdisciplinary environment  and you support students and researchers across the faculty. The department works closely with colleagues from the Department of Methodology and Statistics within the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, creating a vibrant academic network with expertise across a broad range of methodological and statistical domains. These include multilevel and mixed models, structural equation modelling, item response theory, intensive longitudinal data analysis, missing data methods, clustering techniques, reliability and agreement, and optimal design.

As Assistant Professor, you combine research, teaching and consultancy activities in a role that contributes directly to the faculty’s educational quality and research excellence. You inspire students, support researchers and help shape methodological innovation within the faculty and beyond.

What you do

You contribute to excellent education and innovative research while strengthening methodological expertise across the faculty.

  • Inspire and support psychology students in developing the methodological and statistical skills needed for future scientific and professional practice.
  • Teach and coordinate statistics and methodology courses within the Bachelor's programme in Psychology and, over time, potentially contribute to advanced Master's-level courses.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate educational activities and teaching materials that promote active and engaging learning.
  • Conduct independent and collaborative research in methodology and statistics, preferably in areas such as Bayesian inference, causal inference, network analysis, structural equation modelling or multilevel modelling.
  • Provide methodological and statistical support to students, researchers and staff within the faculty.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary research teams across faculties and research institutes.
  • Contribute to methodological innovation that strengthens research quality throughout the university.

Are you ready to help shape the future of research and education? Then we'd love to meet you.

What you bring

It's not about ticking boxes; it's about your curiosity, expertise and motivation. Do you recognise yourself in this profile?

Within our department, collaboration, curiosity and scientific integrity are central. We are looking for someone who enjoys working with others, takes initiative and is motivated to strengthen both education and research.

  • Academic expertise in methodology and statistics – You hold a PhD in Statistics, Psychometrics, Biometrics, Econometrics or a related field and actively contribute to the scientific community through publications in international peer-reviewed journals.
  • Passion for teaching and learning – You have experience teaching statistics or methodology within the behavioural, social or medical sciences and are motivated to contribute to innovative and student-centred education.
  • Strong analytical and programming skills – You have excellent quantitative and programming skills, particularly in R. Experience with JASP is considered an advantage.
  • Collaborative and proactive – You enjoy working independently while actively contributing to interdisciplinary teams. You take initiative, think analytically and communicate complex ideas in a clear and structured way.
  • Strong communicator – You communicate effectively in English, both written and spoken, and are willing to learn Dutch if you are not yet fluent.
