We are looking for a motivated student to support the day-to-day operations of our laboratory. This role combines practical laboratory support with administrative and organizational responsibilities and offers hands-on experience in a fast-paced biotechnology environment.

You will work closely with the Lab Manager and laboratory team to help ensure that the lab remains organized, compliant, and operating efficiently. As you become familiar with our processes, you will have opportunities to take ownership of operational workflows and contribute to continuous improvement projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage inventories of chemicals, samples, reagents, consumables, and cell lines using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Register new laboratory equipment in the LIMS and maintain associated documentation, including manuals, certificates, maintenance records, and other supporting files.
  • Assist with organizing laboratory records and operational documentation.
  • Support tracking of equipment maintenance, calibrations, and service activities.
  • Help coordinate routine operational activities, including stock management and supplier deliveries.
  • Contribute to process improvement and laboratory organization projects.
  • Support day-to-day laboratory operations, including receiving and unpacking deliveries, restocking supplies, managing laboratory waste, and other general lab support activities.
  • Assist with laboratory organization and improvement projects.
  • Perform routine quality control and batch testing of reagents used for cell culture.
  • Participate in shared laboratory responsibilities and contribute to the smooth running of the facility.
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and well-functioning laboratory environment.

Learning Opportunities

This role provides exposure to:

  • Laboratory operations and facility management
  • Inventory and stock management
  • Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
  • Equipment lifecycle management
  • Documentation and quality systems
  • Process improvement within a biotechnology environment

As your experience grows, you may take ownership of specific operational processes and administrative workflows, helping to improve the efficiency and organization of the laboratory, and start working on cell culture and routine laboratory techniques.

Requirements

  • Available to work 16 hours per week, preferably spread over multiple days, with a minimum shift length of 4 hours.
  • Currently living and studying in the Amsterdam area.
  • Pursuing a degree in a biology-related field (e.g., Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Biotechnology, Life Sciences).
  • Interest in gaining hands-on experience in a biotechnology laboratory environment.
  • Comfortable working on both administrative and laboratory-related tasks.
  • Able to learn and work with digital systems, including inventory management and LIMS software.
  • Physically capable of performing practical tasks such as lifting packages and using a step ladder.
  • Well organized, detail oriented, able to work independently, and proactive
  • Interest in laboratory techniques is preferred.

What We Offer

  • Flexible scheduling that can be arranged around your study commitments.
  • Hands-on experience within an innovative biotechnology environment.
  • Exposure to both laboratory and operational aspects of running a research facility.
  • Opportunities to develop organizational, administrative, and technical skills.
  • A supportive and collaborative team environment.

Core Responsibilities

The role involves managing laboratory inventories, equipment maintenance, and operational documentation using LIMS. Additionally, the assistant will support daily lab activities, including waste management, restocking supplies, and performing routine quality control.

Requirements

Candidates must be currently enrolled in a biology-related degree program and living in the Amsterdam area. The position requires the ability to work 16 hours per week and the physical capability to perform practical laboratory tasks.

Benefits

  • Flexible scheduling
  • Hands-on experience

About LUMICKS

Industry: Biotechnology Research

Company size: 201-500 employees

LUMICKS is the leading supplier of dynamic single-molecule and cell avidity analysis instruments. Our instruments enable – for the first time – the analysis of complex dynamic details related to the behavior and interaction of single molecules and cells. Built upon innovative and Nobel Prize-winning technologies, such as optical tweezers (Nobel Prize for Physics 2018), and STED super-resolution (Nobel Prize for Chemistry 2014), our tools enable the understanding of life to the smallest detail. Our goal is to advance science and improve human health, by providing tools that unlock the measurement of forces and interactions in biology. For the first time ever, our unapparelled solutions can assist research by directly linking structural and ‘omics analysis to functional outcomes at both a molecular and a cellular level. This is achieved by applying and measuring forces around biological interactions, enabling the detailed real-time analysis of underlying biological mechanisms.
