Job Description
What if the software you build became part of the infrastructure people rely on to make informed decisions about safety and security across countries, teams and operating environments? At INSO (International NGO Safety Organisation), we're building the INSO Portal: a long-term digital product that brings together services, information and tools for NGO partners, field teams and HQ colleagues around the world. We're looking for a Software Engineer someone who cares about how systems are designed, how they evolve, and what happens after their code reaches production. What makes this role different? You won't just implement. You'll own. From technical design to production and maintenance, you'll take responsibility for the solutions you build. You'll have space to question existing approaches, make thoughtful technical decisions and improve the platform over time. You'll work on a product, not a one-off project. The INSO Portal is continuously evolving. You'll contribute to its architecture, reliability, security and user experience — balancing new features with the less glamorous, but equally important, work of keeping systems maintainable. You'll solve problems with real-world consequences. The platform connects people with the information and tools they need to support safety and security decisions. Reliability, data integrity and usability aren't just engineering principles on paper; they matter to the people using the product. You'll help shape how we build. Work closely with other engineers and operational colleagues, challenge assumptions constructively, and help improve our engineering practices as the platform grows. Your technical playground Our core stack includes: Backend: Java and the Spring ecosystem Frontend: Angular or similar modern web frameworks Data: Relational databases, including MySQL Performance and distributed systems: Redis and RESTful APIs Infrastructure: Containerised environments using Docker and Kubernetes are an advantage We're interested in your engineering judgement, not a checklist of tools. If you understand the fundamentals, care about code quality and can explain why you've chosen one approach over another, we want to hear from you. Who will thrive here? You'll bring 3+ years of professional software development experience, a solid grounding in object-oriented programming and software design, and the ability to reason through complex problems. You'll also be someone who: Takes ownership rather than waiting for every next step to be assigned. Understands that good software must be maintainable, secure and reliable. Is comfortable revisiting decisions, refactoring and adapting as requirements change. Communicates clearly with technical and non-technical colleagues. Thinks about the user and the product, not just the code. Values discussion, constructive challenge and continuous improvement. About INSO Founded in 2011 and headquartered in The Hague, the International NGO Safety Organisation provides free, independent safety and security services to humanitarian NGOs operating in some of the world's most challenging environments. Our teams work in more than 20 countries. Technology is an essential part of how we connect our services, people and information across this global network. What we offer Fixed-term, renewable full-time contract, based in The Hague or remotely. If based in The Hague: €5,200 gross per month 8% holiday pay 2.5 days of annual leave per month Basic Premium ONVZ health insurance for you and your dependents The right to live and work in the Netherlands is required for the Netherlands-based option. INSO does not provide transport or pension benefits. If based outside the Netherlands: Contract type, terms and benefits will be determined in line with INSO policies. Candidates must have the legal right to live and work in their country of residence. INSO is committed to safeguarding and safe recruitment. The selected candidate will undergo the relevant misconduct disclosure checks as part of the final hiring steps. If you enjoy owning your work, improving systems over time and building technology that supports safety and security across a global network, let's talk.
