Job Description

At KWS Vegetables, innovation starts long before a new variety reaches the field. It starts in our laboratories, where science and technology come together to create new opportunities for vegetable breeding.

To strengthen our Cell Biology team, we are looking for a hands-on and curious Postdoc Plant Regeneration to join our research hub in Wageningen, the Netherlands.

In this role, you will develop and improve regeneration systems that support advanced breeding technologies across multiple vegetable crops. Your work will help transform scientific discoveries into practical solutions that accelerate breeding progress and contribute to the next generation of vegetable varieties.

Working closely with colleagues in Cell Biology, Breeding and Research, you will combine scientific excellence with real-world impact in a highly collaborative and international environment.

You will report to the Head of Cell Biology of KWS Vegetables.

Job Purpose

Contribute to the competitiveness of the global KWS vegetable breeding portfolio by developing and implementing efficient, reliable and crop-relevant regeneration technologies.

You will design and execute experiments, generate scientific insights and translate them into practical solutions that support breeding and research activities across KWS Vegetables worldwide.

Your Tasks

  • Develop, optimize and implement regeneration protocols for selected vegetable crops.
  • Design and execute experiments to improve efficiency, reproducibility and plant quality.
  • Investigate factors influencing regeneration responses, including genotype, explant type, media composition and culture conditions.
  • Support advanced cell biology applications such as transformation and gene editing.
  • Analyze experimental data, identify bottlenecks and propose practical solutions.
  • Translate scientific findings into robust protocols for routine application.
  • Collaborate closely with breeding and research teams to support crop improvement objectives.
  • Document experimental procedures, results and optimized methodologies.
  • Stay informed about new developments in plant tissue culture and cell biology.
  • Contribute to a safe, efficient and well-organized laboratory environment.

Your Profile

  • PhD in Plant Cell Biology, Plant Biotechnology, Plant Tissue Culture or a related scientific discipline.
  • Strong hands-on experience in plant tissue culture and regeneration.
  • Experience with vegetable crops or other challenging plant species is an advantage.
  • Proven ability to design experiments and analyze complex biological data.
  • Knowledge of transformation technologies, gene editing or doubled haploid systems is a plus.
  • Curious, proactive and solution-oriented mindset.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to multidisciplinary teams.
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.

Why You'll Want to Join Our Vegetable Squad

  • Contribute to technologies that help shape the future of vegetable breeding.
  • Work at the global R&D hub of KWS Vegetables in Wageningen, one of Europe's leading locations for plant science and innovation.
  • Collaborate with scientists, breeders and technology specialists from around the world.
  • Work across multiple vegetable crops and contribute to breeding programs with global impact.
  • Unlike many research environments, you'll see your work translated into technologies and solutions that directly support breeding programs and help bring the next generation of vegetable varieties to market.
  • Combine scientific discovery with tangible business and breeding impact.
  • Join an international, entrepreneurial and purpose-driven organization where innovation and collaboration go hand in hand.
  • Benefit from attractive employment conditions and continuous opportunities for professional growth and development.
