Job Description

How do you make our customers happy? Every feature bol's shop teams produce - whether it's a customer-facing website innovation, an in-app UX tweak, or an update across agentic channels - is built on a backend environment that you create, cultivate, and curate. You own the backend that lets dozens of teams scale, experiment, and ship with confidence, without ever having to think about what's happening under the hood. And our shop teams are eager to move faster, if you can let them. The biggest challenge The challenge isn't adding backend capabilities; it’s shaping the architecture that 55+ teams depend on. Your team owns the Shop API (federated GraphQL) that exposes their data to bol's shopping channels, the Shop Router that manages all incoming traffic, and several other services at the foundation of the shop. You'll balance competing priorities, clarify dependencies, and drive platform-wide initiatives that improve scalability, engineering effectiveness, and delivery agility without slowing down the teams that rely on that foundation. Can you keep 55+ teams happy by delivering a reliable and scalable environment? What you do as the Senior Product Manager - ShopCore Backend You own the product direction for the backend of the Technical Shop Foundation, working alongside a peer Product Manager Frontend and the Group Product Manager who oversees the combined portfolio. Your focus is on the ShopCore Backend team, which builds the backend capabilities that enable shop teams to create better consumer experiences, faster. You translate strategy into clear, measurable objectives, coordinate delivery, and make trade-offs explicit, connecting roadmap choices to both business and technical outcomes. The role blends developing product strategy, product discovery, and driving cross-team execution. You work closely with engineering, architecture, product, and security specialists to align on outcomes and guide complex platform initiatives from idea to impact. Your key responsibilities: Develop and execute the backend vision for the shopping channels Connect with internal users to understand their needs and problems Drive platform-wide initiatives that improve scalability, engineering effectiveness, and delivery agility Coordinate delivery, balancing priorities and dependencies across the backend product Build long-term partnerships with engineering, architecture, product, and security stakeholders Collaborate closely with engineering on day-to-day product operations Why you can make a difference You combine deep product management experience with the ability to operate in a technically complex environment. You don't need to be an expert engineer, but you understand enough about architecture, services, and platforms to ask the right questions and make decisions that hold up under expert scrutiny. You're comfortable turning strategy into outcomes, navigating ambiguity, and creating clarity for teams that need to deliver. Your strength? Effortless context-switching: aligning on the roadmap with stakeholders one moment, grooming the backlog with your team the next, followed by detailing the implications of technical options for consumers. Where you'll be working You'll join the ShopCore Backend team (:10 engineers), part of the Technical Shop Foundation within the Consumer Journey domain. You'll work closely with the engineering teams building and evolving bol's webshop and app experiences, in a highly technical and impact-driven environment: decisions made here shape how quickly and reliably other teams can build on the platform. The engineers you accelerate serve 13.7 million customers directly, which means every improvement you make unlocks tremendous benefits for the entire organization. Your scope is clear: make the shop foundation better, more scalable, and easier for product teams to build on. Something for you? Platform thinker: You see backend foundations as products in their own right: enabling speed, reliability, and better shop experiences at scale. Technical translator: You explain complex technical decisions to business stakeholders without losing the engineers in the room. And the other way around. Depth on demand: You're not afraid to dive into the problems that matter. You don't need to understand a snippet of code, but you do know what the requirements are and how to address them. Nothing for you? Feature-first and only: You prefer shipping visible end-user features to enhancing backend capabilities that take the entire platform to the next level. Short-term operator: Defining a multi-year platform vision probably sounds compelling to someone. But that someone is not you. Alignment avoider: You'd rather work around stakeholders than build the stakeholder partnerships needed for long-term to platform success. About bol

Industry: Retail

Company size: 1,001-5,000 employees

Bol is the largest online retailer in the Netherlands and Belgium. In 1999 we opened our virtual doors as first online bookstore in the Netherlands. Nowadays we’re working with 2.000 colleagues to deliver the best shopping platform ever. To be able to do this we have expanded our shopping platform in the 20 years of our existence. 2010 was the beginning of bol.com in Belgium. The first step towards our southern neighbors. And we opened our shopping platform to other retailers, for our customers to be able to find ‘everything’ on bol.com. Since 2016 it is possible for our partners to advertise via bol.com. And in 2017 Huub Vermeulen opened the doors of our bol fulfilment center. Shortly: together with 2.000 bol.commers we work to make the daily lives of our customer easier.
