Job Description

Job Description As a consultant staff surgeon, you will work within the HPB & Transplant Surgery division of the Department of Surgery. In addition to liver and kidney transplantation, this division performs complex (oncological) liver, biliary tract, and pancreatic (HPB) procedures. We are seeking a surgeon with particular expertise in transplantation surgery. This includes liver and kidney transplantation, living donor kidney procurement, and deceased donor multi-organ procurement procedures performed through the regionally operating independent organ retrieval team. You will also have the opportunity to participate in the care of patients undergoing HPB surgery. You will participate in the on-call rota, actively contribute to transplant and HPB multidisciplinary team meetings (MDTs), and be involved in perioperative and outpatient care. In addition to your clinical responsibilities within the division, you may contribute to broader departmental activities such as education and training. You are expected to take a leading role in scientific research, particularly within kidney transplantation surgery, including research related to machine perfusion technologies. Erasmus MC is the largest transplant center in the Netherlands and hosts one of Europe's largest living donor kidney and liver transplantation programs. The Department of Surgery comprises the divisions of Vascular Surgery, Trauma Surgery, Oncological & Gastrointestinal Surgery, and HPB & Transplant Surgery. Your primary workplace will be within the HPB & Transplant Surgery division. The Division's Key Areas Of Expertise Include Kidney and liver transplantation (including machine preservation technologies and minimally invasive donor procedures, such as robot-assisted living kidney and liver donation). Multi-organ procurement surgery. Complex (including robot-assisted) HPB surgery. Innovative research in organ transplantation and HPB malignancies. European (UEMS)-accredited fellowship programs in transplantation and HPB surgery. Qualifications And Skills You have proven experience and have completed a fellowship in abdominal transplantation surgery (kidney and liver transplantation), including multi-organ procurement surgery. You have experience with living donor kidney transplantation surgery, including minimally invasive and/or robot-assisted techniques. Experience with other forms of complex robotic surgery, such as living donor liver surgery and HPB surgery, is considered an advantage but is not essential. You hold a PhD (or equivalent doctoral degree) and have demonstrated interest in scientific research within the field of transplantation surgery. A particular interest in kidney machine perfusion technologies is desirable. You possess strong communication skills and work effectively within a multidisciplinary team. You have a demonstrated interest in medical education and training. Terms of employment You will receive a one-year contract with the prospect of a permanent appointment. The gross monthly salary amounts a minimum of € 10.032, - and a maximum of € 14.265,- (schaal UMS). A salary increase of 3,5% from May 2027, according to the collective labor agreement (CLA). Core Responsibilities

Perform liver and kidney transplantation, living donor kidney procurement, and deceased donor multi-organ procurement, while contributing to complex HPB surgery and patient care. Participate in on-call duties and multidisciplinary meetings, support education and training, and lead scientific research, particularly in kidney transplantation and machine perfusion technologies.

Requirements

Requires proven experience and a completed fellowship in abdominal transplantation surgery, including kidney and liver transplantation and multi-organ procurement, as well as experience in living donor kidney transplantation using minimally invasive or robot-assisted techniques. Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree and demonstrate research interest in transplantation; strong communication, multidisciplinary teamwork, and interest in medical education are also expected.
