AI-powered Embedded Software Engineer
Key Skills
Job Description
Vacancy: Embedded Software Engineer (Junior/Medior) Are you a hardware-oriented engineer who writes razor-sharp code for resource-constrained systems? Do you want to make a direct impact on an innovative, wearable medical device within an ambitious scale-up? And do you have the intrinsic motivation and inquisitive mindset to become a frontrunner in AI-powered coding? Then FreeSense Solutions is looking for you! About the role As an Embedded Software Engineer at FreeSense Solutions, you play a key role in developing our smart, biometric wearables. In our dynamic scale-up environment we work according to best-practice (Agile) methodologies. This means you get a lot of freedom, but also that a high degree of independence and a proactive, inquisitive attitude are essential to making projects succeed. You are responsible for the full spectrum: from writing efficient firmware to testing, debugging and releasing on the hardware. Because our wearables run on compact batteries, your focus is on low-resource optimization. In addition, we give you all the space, time and budget (courses/training) to develop at lightning speed in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), taking our edge-computing ambitions to the next level. What will you do? • Write efficient firmware: You develop energy-efficient code for hardware with limited processing power, always with quality best practices and MDR compliance in mind. • Implement modern RTOS systems: You program independently within real-time operating systems such as ThreadX (RTOS). • Integrate connectivity: You apply your knowledge of BLE, LTE-M, NB-IoT and other IoT protocols for reliable data transfer. • Build prototypes and interfaces & debug: You explore new possibilities and develop application-oriented (micro-)Python (debug/support) functions and interfaces. • Test and optimize: You are responsible for thoroughly testing and debugging the embedded software on the physical hardware (STM32/ARM Cortex-M MCU is the current platform). • Quality assurance: You test your own code on the hardware and document this meticulously in accordance with applicable medical standards and development guidelines, with a view to MDR (European Medical Device Regulation) certification. • AI-powered software development: You use AI tools to code more efficiently and help build smart edge-AI algorithms that process medical sensor output into clinically usable and accurate signals. What do you bring? • A relevant technical education (HBO/university level; Embedded Systems, Electrical Engineering or ICT). • Experience with or a strong interest in Python (debug/support), ThreadX (RTOS), Git, VoIP, cybersecurity, and experience and/or interest in Android development. • Knowledge of (or affinity with) BLE/LTE/IoT implementations. • Experience working according to best practices (structured coding, code reviews and clear documentation for medical certification). • The ambition to become highly skilled in AI-powered coding and Machine Learning. • Personality: An independent and inquisitive attitude! You are proactive, analytically strong and thrive in a scale-up development environment where you sometimes have to find your own path and promote your ideas. You enjoy liaising directly with management and working closely with colleagues, but you are also perfectly capable of working independently on ongoing tasks. • Ambition: You have strong intrinsic motivation to rapidly build up your expertise in AI/ML and smart wearables through targeted courses and training! What do we offer you? • A challenging role within an innovative and growing development environment. • A scale-up where you can develop yourself and help chart the course. • A close-knit team with short lines of communication to management, where your ideas are heard immediately. • Training opportunities and budget to specialize in AI, Machine Learning and edge computing. • Excellent primary and secondary employment conditions (tailored to your experience). • A workplace where hardware and software truly come together. • Location: Veldhoven, The Netherlands • Secondary benefits: flexible hours, remote-working options (~50%), training, travel expense allowance, pension scheme after 1 year.
Core Responsibilities
Develop and optimize energy-efficient firmware for wearable medical devices, including implementing RTOS functionality, connectivity, prototypes, and interfaces. Test, debug, document, and release software on physical hardware while supporting medical-device compliance and developing AI-powered edge-processing capabilities.
Requirements
A relevant higher-education qualification in Embedded Systems, Electrical Engineering, or ICT is requested, along with experience or interest in embedded development, Python, RTOS, Git, and IoT connectivity. The role also calls for structured coding, code reviews, clear documentation, analytical and independent working habits, and motivation to develop expertise in AI and machine learning.
Benefits
- Flexible Hours
- Remote-Working Options
- Training Opportunities
- Travel Expense Allowance
- Pension Scheme After One Year
About FreeSense Solutions
Industry: Appliances, Electrical, and Electronics Manufacturing
Company size: 2-10 employees
FreeSense Solutions is a pioneer in remote patient monitoring with voice-powered assistance. We do this through a personalized medical biohearable called “CareBuddy”. It is equipped with vitality sensors, a suite of audio functions and directly connected to a secured data platform (no mobile phone gateways). The new system assists both the patient and careworker in achieving a safer, more comfortable @home recovery while also enhancing the patient's peace-of-mind and lowering healthcare cost. We do this by capturing vital signs - such as heartrate, body temperature, SpO2, respiration rate - and combining this with compelling audio features - such as detection of vocal biomarkers and direct voice and alerting services with remote careworkers. eCareBuddy is truly the first empathetic wearable "Buddy" for home patient monitoring. It is currently in a pre-pilot stage and medical certification is being prepared. If you want to learn more about our development or want to try pilot testing, please drop us a line: [email protected]
