Job Description

Your job The Dutch government aims to strengthen societal resilience against war and disaster. The military plays a prominent role in these efforts, raising concerns about militarization and its adverse impact. In this PhD, you study how militarization in the Netherlands unfolds and examine its effects. Your Duties And Responsibilities Include You conduct a literature review on ‘militarization’ in the context of crises, domestic security, and resilience. You analyze Dutch policy documents to determine whether/how these documents contribute to a militarization of society and whether/how it contributes to militarism. You collect qualitative, empirical data on the implementation of resilience measures (e.g. expansion of military terrains, emergency booklets, citizen mobilization, increased civil-military, and new crisis plans) to critically examine their effects. You write and publish several scientific articles to contribute to critical scholarship on resilience and critical military studies. You contribute to policy and practice by sharing constructive reflections on current and proposed policies, and by presenting your findings. You will be co-supervised by dr. Jori Kalkman and dr. Sumit Vij. Your qualities You are a curious, independent, and motivated student, with an interest in militarization who wants to contribute to our understanding of an important societal issue. You Also Possess A successfully completed MSc degree in the social sciences, such as sociology, anthropology, or public administration Strong research and writing skills, as proven by an excellent Master’s thesis and/or publications in (professional) journals, newspapers, or blogs Demonstrable affinity with domestic security, armed forces and/or resilience Experience with qualitative research, such as interviews, document analysis, visual analysis, and/or ethnographic research The ability to take initiative, be creative, and take control over the PhD process. For this position you should be fluent in Dutch. Sometimes it is necessary to submit an internationally recognised Certificate of Proficiency in the English Language. This is based on a full-time working week of 38 hours. We offer a temporary contract for 18 months which will be extended for the duration of the project if you perform well. Requirements

Applicants must have a completed MSc in a social science field and strong research and writing skills, demonstrated through an excellent master’s thesis and/or publications.
