Job Description

Senior Product Design Engineering Lead

Location: Antwerp or Amsterdam | Hybrid
Experience: 8+ years product design experience

From mechanical architecture to mass production. You set the technical bar.

As Senior Product Design Engineering Lead, you drive the mechanical development of Loop’s hardware products from concept to mass production. You operate as a technical leader within cross functional squads, translating product requirements into manufacturable, reliable, high performing mechanical systems. You combine deep mechanical expertise with strong technical judgment, shaping decisions across design, validation, and manufacturing to deliver hardware that performs at scale.

The role

You own the system level mechanical architecture and the quality of the technical solution. From proof of concept through EVT, DVT, and PVT, you ensure product requirements translate into robust engineering decisions, with performance, manufacturability, reliability, and elegant design championed throughout development. Depending on team structure, you directly own CAD or oversee it, setting a high bar for modeling processes, tolerancing, mechanical stack ups, and design documentation.

You lead through the decisions that determine whether a product succeeds at scale. You drive material and process selection against performance, cost, and timeline needs, and ensure prototyping and analysis are used to prove function and reduce uncertainty. When mechanical issues emerge, you bring structure to ambiguity, driving disciplined root cause analysis and risk mitigation to keep programs moving.

Your impact goes beyond the mechanical design itself. You bring Industrial Design, Product, Operations, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Sourcing, Acoustics, UX, and other partners into the right conversations at the right time. You make trade offs visible, challenge assumptions when needed, and help teams align around a technically sound and achievable product vision.

What you’ll do

  • Own system level mechanical architecture, from early concepts through production readiness

  • Translate the PRD into a clear Engineering Requirements Document that guides detailed design, validation, and reliability testing

  • Drive material and manufacturing process selection aligned with product performance, cost, and timeline requirements

  • Lead structured root cause analysis and risk mitigation for mechanical issues, including issues emerging during late stage builds

  • Guide cross functional technical decisions, framing trade offs clearly and keeping decisions aligned with long term program goals

  • Drive engineering sprints that enable critical milestones including PRD lock, vendor selection, and gate reviews

  • Build trusted partnerships across engineering, design, product, operations, quality, sourcing, and suppliers

  • Surface technical risks early and create the clarity needed for teams to make difficult decisions quickly

You won’t

  • Let difficult trade offs stay unresolved until they become late stage problems

  • Separate mechanical architecture from manufacturability, reliability, or cost

  • Choose comfortable alignment over the hard conversations needed to protect the product

  • Talk about AI without practicing it in your workflow

How you’ll succeed

You create thoughtful, elegant mechanical systems that deliver on the product vision and remain robust through scale. Programs move toward agreed requirements, timelines, reliability, and cost targets because risks are surfaced early and trade offs are made deliberately.

You bring clarity when constraints compete. Your technical decisions are grounded in evidence, your root cause process is rigorous, and stakeholders understand both the recommendation and the reasoning behind it. You build trust across functions by pulling the right people into decisions early and holding a consistently high bar for mechanical quality, feasibility, and design integrity.

What you’ll bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or a related field

  • 8+ years of experience in mechanical product design, ideally in consumer electronics or hardware

  • Deep expertise in 3D CAD, with strong knowledge of tolerancing, material selection, and mechanical stack ups

  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes including injection molding, die casting, CNC, and supplier collaboration during builds

  • Experience using root cause analysis, DFMEA, prototyping, and validation testing to identify and resolve mechanical risks

  • Strong judgment navigating complex trade offs across Industrial Design, Product Management, Operations, Quality, and engineering partners

  • The ability to influence technical decisions by communicating engineering feasibility, risks, and options clearly

  • Intentional, practical use of AI to improve the quality of your work and decisions. You know where AI adds value and where it doesn’t, critically evaluate its outputs, and remain accountable for what you ship. We’ll explore how you use AI and the judgment you apply to its outputs during our interview process.

Loop isn’t for everyone. We might not be a match if you:

  • Prefer owning a component without considering the full system

  • Avoid making difficult calls when performance, cost, timing, and manufacturability compete

  • Wait until late stage builds to surface technical risks

  • Feel uncomfortable challenging assumptions or driving alignment across functions

Interview Process

  • Application window: Now through November 2. Applications will only be accepted during this window.

  • Phone screens (Recruiter + Hiring Manager): October 14 to November 6

  • Onsite interviews: November 9 to November 20

  • Target offer date: November 25

  • Target start date: January 4

Still listening?

Good. Because building great hardware takes more than getting the mechanics to work. It takes judgment, technical depth, and the ability to make the right calls from first architecture through mass production. If you’re ready to own those decisions and raise the bar for what ships, apply and let’s talk.

Core Responsibilities

You will lead the mechanical development of hardware products from initial concept through to mass production. This involves managing system-level architecture, driving cross-functional technical decisions, and ensuring high standards for manufacturability and reliability.

Requirements

Candidates must have a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field and at least 8 years of experience in mechanical product design. Strong expertise in 3D CAD, manufacturing processes, and the ability to navigate complex technical trade-offs are essential.
