Key Skills
Job Description
We are currently looking for a Scientist - Underwater Communications to join the team in The Hague. Ever wanted to help build a wireless "underwater internet" with a team of talented colleagues? Or to plan and evaluate missions with underwater drones? Then this role as an underwater communications scientist is for you. In today's uncertain geopolitical climate, safeguarding our society matters more than ever. Joining means playing an active part in building a safer world, both in the Netherlands and across Europe, closely collaborating with Dutch Defence organisations. The work centres on research and development of autonomous underwater systems. Typical applications include finding sea mines with autonomous underwater and surface drones, stand-off anti-submarine warfare, wireless underwater (network) communication, and protecting critical infrastructure on the seabed. The team builds state-of-the-art acoustic sensor systems, along with advanced data-processing algorithms for communication, visualisation and information extraction, all aimed at creating situational awareness. Responsibilities As an underwater communications scientist, you will contribute to several projects, delivering innovative solutions for clients in the defence and security sector. Every project has its own team that you collaborate with closely, and as no two projects are the same, there is plenty of room to keep growing. Depending on your background and interests, your work could include: Improving algorithms for underwater acoustic and optical communication across the different layers of the OSI model. Researching how to optimise communication within networks of autonomous (underwater) nodes and drones. Designing, preparing and running experiments, using realistic simulations as well as measurements in the lab or at sea. Reporting and presenting your results to clients and colleagues. Do you thrive in a team and want a job that benefits society? This role offers variety and supports your growth as a scientist. Requirements Besides being enthusiastic about the work, you recognise yourself in the following: You have at least a Master's degree in electrical engineering and/or computer science. You have experience or a specialization in telecommunications and signal processing, including experience with algorithm development. You have knowledge of modulations, network protocols and architectures. You preferably already have several years of experience in doing (applied) research. You are proactive and assertive; You feel responsible for the end result and ensure that business gets done. You communicate clearly and convincingly in English, both orally and in writing. Dutch is an advantage. You are also able to work in an international and military context, such as in European or NATO projects. You are open to new ideas, eager to learn, and help others learn in turn. Privacy Notice: In order to apply for this vacancy you must submit your personal information to Science [&] Technology.
