At VIG Re, we are transforming the way reinsurance business is supported through modern technology solutions. We are looking for an experienced Java Backend Developer who is passionate about cloud-native development, scalable architectures, and building secure, high-performance applications. As a Java Backend Developer, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining the high-performance services and APIs that power VIG Re’s digital platforms. The role focuses on building scalable, resilient, and secure microservices deployed on Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS). As part of our Core technology team, you will bridge the gap between business requirements and technical implementation, working closely with Application Owners, Data Engineers and SREs to deliver reliable cloud-native solutions while ensuring compliance with industry regulatory standards. What You Can Expect Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services using Java (Spring Boot/Quarkus) to support VIG Re’s core business logic and digital transformation Implement seamless connections between applications and Azure-native services (e.g., Azure SQL, Cosmos DB, Service Bus, and Key Vault) ensuring high performance and security Develop and document robust RESTful APIs (OpenAPI/Swagger) that enable efficient data exchange between internal systems and external insurance partners Collaborate with the SRE team to package applications into Docker images and manage their lifecycle within Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) Maintain high code standards through Test-Driven Development (TDD), automated unit/integration tests, and proactive code reviews Implement application-level logging, tracing (using OpenTelemetry), and health checks to allow proactive monitoring within Azure Monitor Ensure all developed code follows Secure SDLC practices and meets strict industry requirements (GDPR, Solvency II) Participate in technical discussions with Data Engineers and SREs to align application architecture with platform and infrastructure goals Deliver and maintain robust Java-based microservices using Spring Boot or Quarkus Ensure seamless integration with Azure services including Azure Service Bus, Cosmos DB and Azure SQL Design, document and maintain secure, versioned RESTful or gRPC APIs Contribute to a high-quality codebase through TDD, automated testing and observability Identify opportunities to optimize performance and simplify complex workflows Partner with SREs and business stakeholders to translate complex reinsurance logic into functional solutions Troubleshoot and resolve application-level bugs and performance bottlenecks What we Expect University degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field Proven experience developing enterprise-grade backend systems, ideally within financial services, insurance, or highly regulated sectors Advanced proficiency in Java (17+) and the Spring ecosystem Experience with Docker, Kubernetes (AKS), SQL and NoSQL databases Knowledge of Azure Service Bus, Kafka, or RabbitMQ Knowledge of OWASP secure coding practices, GDPR and regulated environments Oracle Certified Professional: Java SE Developer or Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate certification is an advantage Deep technical expertise in building, scaling and securing modern application components Detail-oriented and focused on delivering high-quality work Proactive and interested in the latest technologies Strong communication, collaboration and networking skills Analytical and strategic thinker capable of translating complex concepts into actionable plans Fluent in spoken and written English What we Offer A unique opportunity to work on modern cloud-native technologies within a leading international reinsurance company, collaborate with experienced professionals, contribute to strategic technology initiatives, and further develop your expertise in a flexible and international environment Professional development within a leading insurance group in Central and Eastern Europe An extensive benefits package Flexible working hours for better work-life balance A collaborative and supportive international team environment Cozy office spaces in the city of Prague providing a comfortable and focused work atmosphere

Core Responsibilities

Design, develop, and maintain secure, scalable Java microservices and versioned RESTful or gRPC APIs deployed on Azure Kubernetes Service, integrating them with Azure services and databases. Collaborate with SREs, data engineers, and business stakeholders to deliver reliable solutions, maintain code quality and observability, and troubleshoot performance or application issues.

Requirements

A university degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field and proven experience developing enterprise-grade backend systems are expected. Candidates should have advanced Java 17+ and Spring expertise, experience with Docker, Kubernetes, SQL and NoSQL databases, and knowledge of messaging systems and secure coding; English fluency is required.
