Job Description

Apply Now Apply Now Alquion is looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer ‍ We are a Dutch Cleantech scale-up based in Rotterdam’s main port and Eindhoven’s Brainport. Our company origins from a merger between Battolyser Systems and VDL Hydrogen Systems. We are engineers on a mission to capture low-cost solar and wind energy and convert it into affordable hydrogen to fuel our industries sustainably. We develop the first fully flexible pressurized alkaline electrolyser for industrial applications. Unlike conventional systems that cannot follow volatile power prices, our Flexolyser™ is designed to switch on and off without compromise. This way Flexolyser™ integrates renewable energy into our future energy system by only converting low-cost electricity to hydrogen and selling electricity to the grid when prices are high. ‍ With innovative design and decades of manufacturing experience, we unlock new business models and deliver reliable systems solutions at industrial scale. Our products help secure European energy independence, build competitive industries, and power a net-zero industrial future. Do you want to make a positive impact by working in a fast pace cleantech scale-up? Join our international team of bright colleagues with professional backgrounds in various top companies and institutes. ‍ About The Role ‍ As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be part of the Stack Development Team in Eindhoven, working on the design of our next build. Our product is built from a large number of cells in series, and then from several of those stacks working together on one system. Small differences and small mistakes carry through in these final assemblies. ‍ Your job is to understand the challenges and produce a design that can be built at a cost that works. You decide where the design needs optimising and where it is good enough. You look beyond day one: how it ages, how it is maintained, and what happens at end of life. Together with colleagues from other disciplines and suppliers, you reach solutions that fit and that meet our requirements and the regulations that apply. ‍ Your Main Responsibilities Are: ‍ The mechanical design of the stack from concept, through prototype, to a release that production can build The structural module around it, and the same design support to our balance-of-stack design Making both manufacturable and affordable at serial volumes, with substantiation that stands up under PED 2014/68/EU and notified-body scrutiny The technical relationship with the suppliers who build it: selection, development, qualification, and solving problems together The mentorship to more junior engineers providing technical guidance and, fostering a safety-conscious and standards-compliant engineering culture. ‍ We value autonomy and you will have lots of freedom, with that we expect you to take initiative and ownership of your role. Depending on your level of experience, you will start with an appropriate scope of responsibility and grow into more complex design and system-level work over time, supported by experienced colleagues. You will work with an international team of fun and bright colleagues with professional backgrounds in various top companies and institutes, check us out on LinkedIn. ‍ About You ‍ You are pragmatic before you are theoretical. You have seen designs fail in production and you design to avoid it. You are comfortable deciding with incomplete information, because in first-of-a-kind development it always is. You do not shy away from making your hands dirty. ‍ What We Think You Need: ‍ A design you owned that was built and then ran for years, so you know how it aged and what it took to keep it running Senior-level experience creating mechanical designs suitable for medium to high volume production scale Working knowledge of material selection, corrosion and manufacturability and why they decide a design Experience developing suppliers technically, not just buying from them SolidWorks, and the discipline that goes with proper drawing and revision control ‍ Nice to have, not required: experience with pressure equipment under PED, skid, frame or containerised equipment design, electrochemical or high-current environments, simulation capability, Dutch. ‍ What We Offer ‍ A Creative, Informal Team That Would Rather Solve The Problem Than Hold The Meeting About It. Next To That, We Offer You a Position In Which You Will Have An Important Contribution To Our Mission To ‘Secure Europe’s Energy Future’, Including The Following: ‍ A salary that matches your responsibilities and experience 27 leave days Laptop and iPhone A chance to contribute directly to the energy transition and help commercialize innovative technology An amazing team of awesome colleagues fully dedicated to exploring new horizons together ‍ Alquion is an Equal Opportunity Employer and welcomes Diversity! ‍ Interested? ‍ If you feel you are the right fit with the right motivation, we can’t wait to receive your application. About Alquion

Industry: Energy Technology

Company size: 11-50 employees

Alquion is a cleantech scale-up formed by the merger of Battolyser Systems and VDL Hydrogen Systems that develops & manufactures the Flexolyser®, the first fully flexible pressurized alkaline electrolyser for industrial applications. Flexolyser can switch on and off following intermittent renewable energy, procuring hydrogen when power prices are low and selling electricity when prices are high, improving project IRR with 40-80%. The technology can switch on and off multiple times per day without performance compromise, procuring hydrogen when power prices are low and selling electricity when prices are high. This unlocks new power trading business models and flexible grid services, lowering the cost of locally produced green hydrogen below the cost of import.
