Test Engineer (VDR & Beacon)
Key Skills
Job Description
Test Engineer (VDR & Beacon)
Zoetermeer, Netherlands (Head Office) | Full-time | Reports to Engineering Manager
About us
Seas of Solutions is a maritime technology company dedicated to making every journey safer, smarter, and more sustainable. Through our brands Kannad Marine, McMurdo, and Netwave, we develop and deliver advanced IT and electronic systems, including Voyage Data Recorders (VDRs) and safety beacons, to customers worldwide.
The role
We're looking for a Test Engineer to join our R&D team on-site in Zoetermeer, the Netherlands, with a focus on functional testing of our VDR and emergency beacon (EPIRB/PLB) product lines. You'll work closely with software, firmware, and hardware engineers to verify that our products meet demanding maritime safety, reliability, and regulatory requirements before they reach customers.
What you will do
- Design, execute, and document functional test plans and test cases for VDR systems and emergency beacon (EPIRB/PLB) products, covering hardware, firmware, and software behavior
- Perform hands-on bench and system-level testing across the product lifecycle: development, verification, pre-production, and field-issue investigation
- Identify, log, and track defects, working closely with software, firmware, and hardware engineers to reproduce issues and verify fixes
- Support type-approval and regulatory certification testing (e.g. IEC 61996 for VDR, Cospas-Sarsat and MED/Wheelmark for beacons) alongside our certification specialists
- Build and maintain test fixtures, scripts, and procedures, and help introduce automated testing where it adds value
- Produce clear, structured test reports and documentation suitable for internal review and regulatory submission
- Collaborate with project managers and cross-functional engineering teams working in our stage-gate/agile hybrid development process
What you will offer
- Relevant technical degree or equivalent professional experience (electronics, electrical engineering, mechatronics, computer engineering, or similar)
- Around 2–5 years of experience in a test engineering, verification, or quality assurance role for electronic/embedded products
- Solid understanding of functional test methodology for combined hardware, firmware, and software systems
- Comfortable working hands-on with test equipment (e.g. oscilloscopes, power supplies, RF test gear) and reading schematics
- Strong attention to detail, with clear and structured technical documentation and reporting skills
- Good written and spoken English; Dutch is a plus
- Willing and able to work on-site in Zoetermeer, the Netherlands
Why join us
- Work on safety-critical technology that genuinely saves lives at sea, under a respected brand in maritime safety equipment
- A collaborative R&D team spanning software, firmware, and hardware disciplines
- Hands-on ownership of testing for flagship products (VDR and emergency beacons), not a narrow, siloed role
- Room to grow your skills in automated testing, RF/embedded systems, and maritime regulatory domains
- A stable, established company with an international customer base, based in Zoetermeer, the Netherlands
- Marke-competitive salary and pension benefits
- A diverse and inclusive working environment
