Job Description

Company Description Next Generation Sensors B.V. develops portable mass spectrometry solutions to provide fast, accurate screening for health, security, and environmental risks. The company addresses limitations of traditional lab-based instruments by bringing advanced analytical capabilities directly to the sample. Its technology is designed to reduce testing time and cost while maintaining high-quality measurements. Applications span medical diagnostics, agriculture, security, and industrial process monitoring, offering broad opportunities for innovation and impact. Team members contribute to solutions that help make critical measurements more accessible and efficient. Role Description The Engineer Intern role is a full-time, on-site position based in Maastricht. The intern will support the design, development, and testing of portable mass spectrometer components and systems, working closely with engineering and scientific staff. Daily tasks may include assisting with hardware assembly, participating in experiments, collecting and analyzing test data, and documenting technical findings. The intern will help troubleshoot equipment, contribute to process improvements, and maintain a safe and organized lab and workshop environment. This role offers hands-on experience in applied engineering and exposure to real-world applications in medical, agricultural, security, and industrial settings. Qualifications Foundational knowledge in engineering or a related technical field (e.g., mechanical, electrical, physics, or chemical engineering). Practical skills in basic mechanical assembly, use of hand tools, and familiarity with laboratory or workshop environments. Ability to perform structured experiments, collect measurements, and analyze data using standard software tools (e.g., Excel, MATLAB, or similar). Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and willingness to learn new technologies related to mass spectrometry and sensor systems. Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document procedures, results, and technical notes clearly. Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team and follow safety and quality protocols consistently. Enrollment in or recent completion of a relevant bachelor’s or master’s program; prior internship or project experience is an advantage. Interest in applications across medical, agricultural, security, or industrial process monitoring; experience in any of these domains is beneficial. Ready for the next step? About Next Generation Sensors B.V.

Industry: Research

Company size: 11-50 employees

There is an ever increasing need for obtaining immediate accurate screening information for potential health, security, and environmental risks. However, most of the high end analytical instruments/techniques are laboratory stated (increasing the test time) and expensive. At Next Generation Sensors we aim to solve this problem by ‘bringing the lab to the sample with a portable mass spectrometer’. Applications include medical, agriculture, security and process monitoring.
