Flowkade is a start-up creating thoughtful digital learning experiences for children and educators. We combine educational expertise, playful interaction, product design, and modern web technology to make learning engaging and effective. As our Game Development Intern, you will help build a browser-based 2D educational game prototype for children. You will translate game and learning concepts into responsive interactions, progression, feedback, animation, and reusable game systems. You will work closely with our educational and creative team, with regular opportunities to discuss your work and improve the learner experience. The exact tools and game framework have not yet been fixed. Together, we will select an approach that suits the prototype, the product, and your learning goals. What You Will Work On Depending on your experience and learning goals, you will: Develop 2D gameplay and interactive mechanics Turn educational and creative concepts into playable experiences Build UI, animation, feedback, rewards, and progression Integrate artwork, sound, and other game assets Work with player progress and game state Create components and systems that can be reused across activities Test, debug, and improve performance across browsers and devices Contribute ideas about game feel, motivation, usability, and accessibility You will not be expected to create everything independently. The internship is an opportunity to learn how a game concept develops into a working product through experimentation, feedback, and collaboration. What We Are Looking For Essential Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s programme in Game Development, Creative Technology, CMGT, Software Development, or a related field Basic programming skills Experience with at least one interactive project, game, prototype, or similar project An interest in 2D game mechanics, interaction, animation, UI, debugging, and testing Curious, eager to learn, and comfortable solving technical problems Authorized to work in the Netherlands Helpful, but not required Experience with JavaScript and/or TypeScript Familiarity with HTML5 and browser-based development Experience with a game framework, engine, or interactive web library Familiarity with Git or another version-control system An interest in education, learning design, or games for children You do not need to know all the technologies in advance. We care about your technical foundation, learning ability, curiosity, and approach to building interactive experiences. Portfolio We would like to see something you have worked on before. This could be a school project, personal game, playable prototype, GitHub repository, video, or another relevant project. It does not need to be commercially released or highly polished. Requirements
Applicants must be enrolled in a relevant bachelor's programme, have basic programming skills and experience with at least one interactive project, and be authorized to work in the Netherlands. They should be interested in 2D game development and eager to learn; JavaScript or TypeScript, HTML5, game frameworks, and version control are helpful but not required.
