Job Description
Mechanical Engineer – BeephoniX B.V. 1. Purpose of the Role The Mechanical Engineer (mid/senior level) is responsible for the design, development, and realization of high-quality mechanical systems and components that are essential to BeephoniX’s audio technology. The role is not limited to execution; it also involves independently translating complex research challenges into technically feasible, scalable, and manufacturable solutions. The engineer plays a key role in making design decisions, safeguarding technical quality, and driving the development process from concept through to production. In addition, the role actively contributes to product architecture, manufacturability, and strategic technical decisions throughout the development lifecycle. 2. Position within the Organization Reports to: Engineering Team Lead Works closely with Embedded Software Engineers, Signal Processing Engineers, Industrial Design / Product Development, external suppliers and manufacturing partners, and potentially clients and research institutions. Takes a leading role within projects in the mechanical domain and serves as the primary technical point of contact. 3. Key Result Areas 3.1 Design and System Development Designing complex mechanical systems and subsystems (enclosures, acoustic structures, mounting solutions). Translating functional and acoustic requirements into robust technical designs. Balancing performance, manufacturability, cost, and scalability. Defining and safeguarding design principles and technical standards. (Senior) Developing modular and future-proof product architectures. 3.2 Prototyping, Validation and Iteration Leading and executing prototype development (rapid prototyping, test setups). Developing and analyzing testing methodologies (mechanical, thermal, vibration, usability). Interpreting test results and translating them into design improvements. Validating integration with electronics and software. 3.3 Industrialization and Production Translating designs into production-ready solutions (DFM / DFA). Selecting and managing suppliers and manufacturing partners. Assessing manufacturing techniques and material selection. Creating and maintaining technical documentation (drawings, specifications, BOM). Monitoring quality, cost, and lead times. (Senior) Initiating and optimizing production processes and steering technical decisions with suppliers. 3.4 Integration and Multidisciplinary Collaboration Coordinating mechanical integration within the overall product. Playing an active role in multidisciplinary development teams. Aligning with software and hardware teams on interfaces and requirements. Identifying system risks and dependencies. 3.5 Innovation and Continuous Development Initiating technical improvements and new applications. Exploring and applying new materials and manufacturing techniques. Contributing to the further development of core technology. (Senior) Acting as a technical sparring partner for management. 4. Job Requirements Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design Engineering, Mechatronics or similar. Knowledge of CAD software (SolidWorks, Fusion 360 or similar), manufacturing techniques (CNC machining, injection molding, additive manufacturing), and materials science. Knowledge of acoustics is a plus. Mid-level: 3–6 years of experience in product development or R&D. Senior: 6+ years of experience, including responsibility for full designs and/or systems. Experience in a startup, scale-up, or deeptech environment is a strong plus. Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, ability to make independent technical decisions, hands-on mindset, stakeholder management skills, and strong communication skills. 5. Competencies Ownership, systems thinking, decisiveness, collaboration, innovative mindset, and results-driven approach. 6. Context of the Role (Scale-up / Deeptech) The role is performed in an environment characterized by ongoing transition from technology development to productization, limited resources combined with high technical complexity, rapidly changing priorities, and direct impact of individual contributions. 7. Working Conditions and Additional Information Working on innovative deeptech solutions with direct involvement in product development from concept to market, offering a high level of autonomy and growth opportunities. 8. Language Requirements Dutch: professional working proficiency. English: strong verbal and written skills. German: a plus.
Core Responsibilities
Design and develop mechanical systems and components for audio technology, translating research and product requirements into robust, scalable, manufacturable solutions. Lead prototyping, testing, multidisciplinary integration, supplier coordination, and industrialization from concept through production.
Requirements
A bachelor's or master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field is required, along with CAD and manufacturing knowledge. About BeephoniX Defense & Security
Industry: Defense and Space Manufacturing
Company size: 11-50 employees
BeephoniX delivers a fully passive, AI-enabled acoustic detection layer that provides early detection, localisation, and tracking of small drones and airborne threats. Designed for defense, security, crisis-response, and public-safety environments, our solutions operate effectively exactly where traditional radar, RF, and optical sensors struggle—such as in urban clutter, GPS-denied zones, and against RF-silent drones. Our technology is built with operational flexibility at its core. Whether deployed as a distributed, energy-efficient edge-AI sensor (M3), a rapidly deployable tactical mobile array with Starlink connectivity (M2), or a strategic long-range sensor for critical perimeter security (M1), BeephoniX acts as a true force multiplier. By integrating seamlessly into layered Counter-UAS and ISR architectures via NATO-standard interfaces like SAPIENT, we enhance situational awareness and provide covert early warnings without ever emitting a signal that could reveal your position.
