Transportation Maintenance Tech I: Performs routine (Learning) transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: construction, maintenance, and/or material and process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details. Transportation Maintenance Tech II: Performs moderately complex (Intermediate) transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: construction, contract maintenance, and material and process inspections roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Transportation Maintenance Tech III: Performs highly complex (Advanced) transportation operations or maintenance support work such as construction, contract maintenance, and material and process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Transportation Maintenance Tech IV: Performs advanced transportation operations or maintenance support work such as complex maintenance contract inspection and/or material and process inspection; light and heavy equipment operation; roadway maintenance; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Transportation Maintenance Tech V: Performs highly advanced transportation operations or maintenance support work such as complex maintenance contract inspection and/or material and process inspection; light and heavy equipment operation; roadway maintenance; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Essential Duties: Transportation Maintenance Tech I, II, III, IV or V: Learns to operate light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yard or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper and mower. Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic. Assists in identifying, repairing, and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities. Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites. Move/picks up litter and roadway debris. Mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush. Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms and PMI. Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required. Roadway Accidents/Inclement Weather/Natural Disasters-Must be able to respond 24/7 when notified. Assists in sanding or cleaning bridges and roads, posting warning signs, helping the public and performing other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Additional duties for a Transportation Maintenance Tech II include: Inspects construction and routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites. Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yard or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper and dump truck. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Additional duties for a Transportation Maintenance Tech III include: Inspects construction and routine and non-routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications. Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites. Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large grader, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor and profiling/milling machine. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Additional duties for a Transportation Maintenance Tech IV include: Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck. Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower. Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI. Reviews plans, enters data and updates, stores and maintains plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E) documents and files; assists in PS&E processing for letting, to include reproducing and distributing documents. Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills. May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications. Additional duties for a Transportation Maintenance Tech V include: Reviews and assists in the development of traffic control plans, coordinates with law enforcement agencies, monitors lane closures at construction sites, documents changes in the traffic control setup and coordinates with the Public Information Officer. Reviews plans, enters data and updates, stores and maintains plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E) documents and files; assists in PS&E processing for letting, to include reproducing and distributing documents. Inspects routine and non-routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications. Minimum Qualifications: Education: No education required. Experience for Transportation Maintenance Tech (TMT): TMT I = No experience required TMT II = 1 year experience* TMT III = 2 years experience* TMT IV = 3 years experience* TMT V = 4 years experience* Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications . Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
