Summary
Assist self-identifying LGBTQ individuals who may be at risk in their settlement process and adaptation to Canadian society by creating, linking, and/or enhancing their support networks with communities, organizations, and agencies to promote general well-being and connection to the broader community.
How You Will Make a Difference
- Based on needs identified during initial assessments, (e.g. NAARs for GARs, Comprehensive NAARs), assist self-identifying LGBTQ clients in setting goals/priorities; developing realistic action plans that may include one-to-one and/or family personalized support; customizing group workshops; and providing settlement information, practical assistance, and support to access services. Provide ongoing monitoring of action plans, including quarterly review of needs.
- Provide individual/group orientations and workshops to assist the settlement process and community connections in English or first language based on assessed client needs, which includes awareness and how to access/navigate programs, resources and services such as housing, medical/health care, transportation, education, legal and social service and the rights and responsibilities of immigrants and refugees as beneficiaries of these services and systems while providing an understanding of cultural norms and conduct in Canadian communities. Arrange for interpretation services as required.
- Oversee individual and group services such as workshops and training, including specific orientation for newcomers. Deliver Human Rights orientation in groups, families, or individuals to all newly arrived Government-Assisted Refugees (GARs) in conjunction with the Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP) Team.
- Develop support networks and referral systems for LGBTQ clients within ISSofBC and/or other community service agencies/ resources as required and based on client needs. Performs service bridging for clients and staff of external agencies regarding cultural interpretation of issues and client needs.
- Promote and market programming through community partners and other community agencies working with LGBTQ newcomers. Participate in approved sectoral and community networks.
- Enter client information and service interventions into a centralized database as service occurs. Maintains and updates information in accordance with reporting requirements. Provide narrative input into reports.
- Provide support and short-term para-counselling for clients with special needs or circumstances, including liaising between clients and service professionals.
- Performs other related duties as required.
What You Bring
- Diploma in Social Sciences, counselling, or related discipline and a minimum of two (2) years of experience in a client-oriented position, preferable in a settlement services-related field OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Fluency in a targeted second language may be required.
- Current knowledge of settlement and integration issues facing immigrant and refugee who identify as belonging to the LGBTQ community is necessary.
- Training in conflict resolution, case management and/or coaching is preferred.
- Training in gender-based analysis (GBA), LGBTQI, Indigenous history, culture, and reconciliation.
- Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral English at all levels of the organization.
- Experience and a strong understanding of case planning and case management principles and techniques (specific to staff involved in case management)
- Strong working knowledge of settlement integration issues facing vulnerable immigrant and refugee youth and young adults.
- Demonstrated cultural competency and commitment to working effectively with diverse populations.
- Solid understanding of mental health issues affecting vulnerable immigrant and refugee youth, young adults, adult and their families.
- Knowledge about local community resources, particularly professional and specialized services for at-risk or marginalized populations, and how to use those resources for the benefit of the clients.
- Possession of and the ability to maintain a clear provincial Criminal Record Check.
